Welcome Jessica White,
Thank you for reaching out to Microsoft Q&A forum.
I understand how frustrating it can be where pressing the decimal (.) key on the numeric keypad triggers a shutdown is not normal and often points to either a keyboard mapping issue or a stuck modifier key.
Before suggesting more advanced repairs, could you please confirm:
- Are you using a built-in laptop keyboard or an external USB/Bluetooth keyboard?
- Does the problem occur only with the numeric keypad decimal key, or do other keys behave incorrectly as well?
In the meantime, please try these quick checks:
- Test the key using the Windows On-Screen Keyboard:
- Press Windows + Ctrl + O to open the On-Screen Keyboard.
- Enable NumLock if needed and click the numeric keypad decimal key.
- Check whether it enters a period normally.
- Check for stuck modifier keys:
- Press and release Left Alt, Right Alt, Ctrl, and Windows keys several times.
- Then test the decimal key again.
- Press and release Left Alt, Right Alt, Ctrl, and Windows keys several times.
- Test in Safe Mode:
- Open Settings > Update & Security > Recovery
- Under Advanced startup, select Restart now
- Go to Troubleshoot > Advanced options > Startup Settings > Restart
- Select Safe Mode with Networking and test the keypad.
- If you're using an external keyboard, disconnect it and test with another keyboard if available.
Looking forward to your update.
