If the issue is with Windows 11, version 26H2 (the Windows 11 2026 Update), first check whether the device is eligible and whether the update is being offered:
- Open Settings > Windows Update.
- Turn on Get the latest updates as soon as they’re available.
- Select Check for updates.
- If the update is ready for the device, it will download and install automatically, and one restart completes the process.
If the device is on an earlier Windows 11 release and the download still fails, try these repair steps:
- In the taskbar search box, type command prompt.
- Select Run as administrator.
- Run:
DISM.exe /Online /Cleanup-image /Restorehealth
- Wait for the message that the restore operation completed successfully.
- Then run:
sfc /scannow
- Wait until verification reaches 100%.
- Try Windows Update again.
If software conflicts are blocking the download or install, perform a clean restart of Windows and then retry the update.
If the problem is specifically the May 2026 security update failing with error 0x800f0922, that issue was resolved in KB5089573 and later updates. It affected devices with very low free space on the EFI System Partition, especially 10 MB or less.
If the device is trying to get Windows 11, version 26H1, that version is not offered to existing devices through Windows Update and cannot be installed as an in-place update on existing devices. It is available only on new devices with select new silicon.
