Change from personal to business subscription

I use Microsoft software for business purposes and the 365 subscription is paid by my company, registered in England & Wales and for VAT. I understand from my accountant that I am currently unable to reclaim VAT because the subscription is treated as a personal account. Can you please advise how I can change to a business account to enable me to reclaim VAT.

    Hi @Tony Hatton-Gore,

To help confirm whether you're currently using a personal Microsoft 365 subscription, could you please sign in to https://account.microsoft.com/services and let me know whether you see any active subscriptions listed there?

If you see a Microsoft 365 Personal or Microsoft 365 Family subscription, unfortunately VAT cannot typically be reclaimed through that subscription. This is because Personal and Family subscriptions are consumer products that are associated with a personal Microsoft account rather than a business account, and they are not designed to provide business billing features such as VAT-compliant business invoicing.

For future purchases, if your Microsoft 365 subscription was originally purchased as a Microsoft 365 Personal or Microsoft 365 Family subscription using a personal Microsoft account, it cannot be converted into a Microsoft 365 Business subscription. Home plans (Personal/Family) and business plans use different account types and billing systems, so there is no direct conversion path between them.

To obtain future VAT-compliant business invoicing, you would generally need to:

    • Purchase a Microsoft 365 Business subscription (such as Business Basic, Business Standard, or Business Premium) using a work account associated with your company.
    • Enter your company's legal and VAT information during purchase or through the Microsoft 365 Admin Center billing settings.
    • Migrate any required data, such as email or OneDrive files, from the personal account to the business account if needed.
    • Cancel the personal subscription once the business subscription is active and all required data has been moved.

To provide you with the best recommendations and more specific guidance for migration, could you tell me which Microsoft 365 Business plan you plan to purchase (e.g., Business Basic, Business Standard, or Business Premium,....)?

For more information on Business plans, please see:

I hope this information points you in the right direction. Feel free to let me know which Business plan you'd like to purchase, and I can provide you with detailed step-by-step instructions on how to make the transition.

    Kind regards.
