A family of Microsoft products that enable users to capture, organize, and reuse notes electronically.
- First, test whether the notebook opens in OneNote for the web. In OneNote for Mac, select Notebooks > Notebooks > Copy Link to Notebook, paste that link into a browser, and press Enter.
- If the notebook opens in OneNote for the web, the issue is likely the Mac app connection. In OneNote for Mac:
- Select Notebooks > Notebooks > Close This Notebook
- In the browser, with the notebook open in OneNote for the web, select Open in OneNote
- Wait for the notebook to resync fully
- If the notebook does not open in OneNote for the web and shows 404/file not found there too, the problem is likely with the notebook location on the service rather than the Mac app.
- Since the notebook is visible in OneDrive, sign in to OneDrive and browse your folders directly, especially Documents or Notebooks, and try opening the notebook from there.
- On macOS 12.1 and later, OneDrive’s local path changed to Library > Cloud Storage > OneDrive. If recent or pinned locations are being used after the macOS update, open Finder and browse to Library > Cloud Storage > OneDrive or use the OneDrive alias in the old location.
- If the notebook is shared, open it from the shared notebook link in the browser, then in OneNote for Mac select File > Open Notebook and choose the shared notebook.
- If OneNote keeps failing after the notebook opens in the browser, sign out and sign back in to OneNote for Mac:
- OneNote > Sign Out
- Then OneNote > Sign In
- If the issue started after the macOS update and the notebook still cannot be opened from OneNote for the web, check whether other OneNote notes can be found from OneDrive directly. If needed, report it through the OneNote forums on Microsoft Community.
