A cloud-based identity and access management service for securing user authentication and resource access
New Azure Free tenant locked out — personal account has 8-digit Authenticator code, Azure requires 6-digit MFA
I created a new Azure Free Account using my personal Microsoft account.
Azure created a new Entra tenant ("Default Directory"), but when I try to access that tenant Azure requires a 6-digit Microsoft Authenticator code.
My Microsoft Authenticator registration for the personal Microsoft account only provides an 8-digit code. I was never given an opportunity to register an Entra MFA method, and Authenticator push requests do not arrive.
The affected identity is a personal Microsoft account, so aka.ms/mfasetup and the normal Entra security-info pages do not accept the account.
I am the only administrator because the tenant was just created. I therefore cannot access the tenant to reset MFA and cannot create an Azure support request from the Azure portal.
I have also attempted Microsoft Engage Center. It recognizes the Default Directory and identifies my account as a guested personal account, but the "Sign in to Microsoft's tenant for Personal Users" path does not provide a support-request mechanism.
This appears to be a sole Global Administrator tenant lockout caused by incomplete MFA registration.
Could Microsoft External Staff please engage the Data Protection / Tenant Recovery team and open a support ticket for this tenant?
I can provide the affected account, tenant ID, contact email, phone number, country, time zone and proof of ownership privately. After clicking around I was finally able to add my account but it looks like it added it as a work account with the same email. I can now log in to azure but no subscription is showing up and I can't add a subscription (it just returns an error). Now if I call the support line I just get told to come here.
