Average Grade Calculation in Teams.

I am a very enthusiastic teacher in using Microsoft Teams and have set up a lot of processes around the use of TEAMS and the ability for students to monitor their AVERAGE GRADES. This system even feeds into their official reports as the grade boundaries are matched to the AVERAGE GRADE percentage values. However, i am now having a few assignments that are not showing the average grade and is coming up with currently unavailable. I have read around the issue and its been a week with no changes to the average grades updating. It also seems that the same copied assignment (which was a quiz/ automatically marked then returned to students) is not updating for any class. It also has a 5% weighting. Please can you advise me how i can further proceed. thanks

Hi James Andrew Chandler - STEAM Teacher

As a first step, I would suggest checking the following:

    • In the affected class team, go to Assignments/Grades > Assignment settings and make sure the Average Grade feature is enabled.
    • Verify that the affected quiz has been graded and returned to the students.
    • If Grading Categories are enabled, check that the copied quiz has the appropriate grading category assigned. When grading categories are used, assignments with points need to have an associated grading category. (Set up weighted grading categories in Teams Assignments | Microsoft Support).
    • Compare the affected copied quiz with another quiz or assignment whose Average Grade is calculating normally, particularly its points and grading category settings.
    • Check the affected class in Teams on the web as well to see whether the same “Currently unavailable” message appears.

If these settings are already correct, considering that the Average Grade has remained unavailable for about a week and the same copied quiz is affected across multiple classes, this may require further investigation.

A similar case has been reported where assignment grades had been entered and returned but were not being reflected in the calculated averages. In that situation, further investigation through Microsoft 365 Support was recommended. You can refer to: Assignment Averages not being calculated on Teams - Microsoft Q&A

I would therefore suggest contacting your school’s Microsoft 365 administrator and asking them to open a support request through the Microsoft 365 Admin Center. When submitting the request, it would be helpful to include screenshots showing “Currently unavailable”the affected class and quiz details, when the quiz was returned, and mention that the same copied quiz is affected across multiple classes.

I hope this helps point you toward the next step.

    Best regards,
