Managing sound and video settings during Teams meetings and calls
If Teams and Zoom have used the microphone successfully, Windows may not be detecting the currently selected input device in Sound Settings, or the mic may be disabled there even though an app previously accessed it.
Try this in order:
- Open Start > Settings > System > Sound.
- Under Input, check Choose a device for speaking or recording.
- If the microphone appears, select it.
- If it does not appear, select Add device if available.
- Next to Volume, make sure the microphone is not muted.
- Go to Advanced > More sound settings.
- Open the Recording tab.
- If the microphone is listed but disabled, right-click it and select Enable.
- In Teams, open Settings and more > Settings > Devices.
- Confirm the correct device is selected under Microphone.
- Select Make a test call.
- Check Windows microphone permissions:
- Open Start > Settings > Privacy & security > Microphone.
- Turn on Microphone access.
- Turn on Let apps access your microphone.
- Make sure the specific app toggle is on if the issue is only with Teams.
If the mic works in Teams but still does not show correctly in Windows Sound Settings, that usually points to a Windows device detection or settings issue rather than a Teams-specific problem.
If the device is a Surface, also check Input device selection, Input volume, and run Start test in Sound settings.
