Outlook is automatically adding unsolicited meeting invitations

Outlook is automatically adding unsolicited meeting invitations to my primary calendar even when the underlying invitation email has been correctly classified by Outlook as Junk Email. I never accepted or responded to the invitation, yet the spam event was added to my calendar and generated reminders. There appears to be no setting in Outlook.com to prevent unaccepted invitations from unknown external senders from being added to my calendar. This is a serious spam/security design issue: content that Outlook itself identifies as junk should never be allowed to populate a user's calendar without consent. Please provide a way to block this behavior and escalate the issue to the Outlook product/anti-abuse team.

To turn off "Automatically add events from email"......

Individual User Settings (Manual Method)

If you need to turn it off manually on an individual account or web interface rather than globally: [1]

Open Outlook on the Web or the Outlook app.

Click the Settings (gear icon) in the top right corner.

Select View all Outlook settings (or Calendar).

Go to Calendar > Events from email.

Select Don't show event summaries in email or on my calendar (or toggle off Automatically add events to my calendar from email) and save your changes.

Global PowerShell Method (Exchange Online)

Connect to Exchange Online PowerShell as an administrator.

Run the following command to loop through all user mailboxes and disable the feature: Get-Mailbox -RecipientTypeDetails UserMailbox -ResultSize Unlimited | Set-MailboxCalendarConfiguration -EventsFromEmailEnabled $false

Thank you for contribution. But it has been tested and proved that this setting has nothing to do with Calendar Spam events.

This is a know issue. Microsoft is aware of the problem but there is currently no fix, unless you are in an IT Managed Environment.

That actually should no longer be the case indeed.

Meeting invitations that get caught by the Junk Email Filter should not trigger creating a not-yet-responded item on your Calendar.

Can you confirm whether it was indeed caught directly by the Junk Email Filter or whether it was moved by different means? For instance, it was moved by a rule instead. In the case that it was moved by a rule, the not-yet-responded items will remain.

The proper way to remove any lingering invites from your Inbox would be to use the Report command on the Ribbon. This will also remove the item from your Calendar without sending a response.

If the message was caught directly by the Junk Email filter but it still created a not-yet-responded item on your Calendar, it is best to open a support ticket with Microsoft. Unfortunately, you can't do this directly via Outlook.com. You can however use;

I responded to another colleague of yours on a different thread, but you all really need to fix this. I have screenshots to send, but apparently your extremely limited and file sizes that can be accepted. This was absolutely a spam email with a calendar invite that polluted my calendar. because Outlook calendar does not have the same safeguards as Outlook email.. spammers have figured this out and are taking advantage of the loophole and compromising your customers

Also, I know some data center companies that can help Microsoft so that you can accept screenshots to solve problems like this without being limited by file size

I don't work at Microsoft, so it is not my issue to fix ;-)

When cross-posting, please provide the link so I can look at the info in the other thread as well and prevent duplicate requests or suggesting things which have already been tried.

I have no doubt that this was a spam message, but if you also have a rule to move this type of messages to the Junk Email folder, it might not have been caught by the Junk Email filter and thus the meeting item remains. When the item is caught directly by the Junk Email filter, it should not be added to your Calendar.

I have no means to run traces on your mailbox, that is why I suggested opening a support case directly with Microsoft.

The spam emails that triggered the calendar entries were originally caught by the microsoft outlook email junk filter (this was not a blocked sender nor was there any specific rule i set that flagged this particular spam/phishing attempt as junk) and subsequently deleted and sent to the deleted folder but the calendar entries remained. These calendar entries were designed to effectively fill the entire day with official looking meeting information and links. It was malicious and the senders are targeting this vulnerability in Microsoft Outlook calendar which doesn’t follow the same logic as outlook email, nor does Outlook Calendar settings allow you to auto delete calendar entries from a sender in junk.
