Cannot get the Windows Insider builds

Why am I getting these messages in the uploaded images if I have a personal laptop with Windows 11 Pro Beta?

For some reason I am prevented from sending optional diagnostic data to Microsoft, which means I won't get Windows Insider builds.

How can I solve this issue?

    Hello Lufi,

Sorry to hear you are having issues with Optional Diagnostics. First try deleting the entire WindowsSelfHost Key. It will be rebuilt after a reboot:

    HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\WindowsSelfHost

    _AllowTelemetry-SelfHostKey

As for the registry entries, there are technically two different locations depending on how the settings are applied.

HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Policies\Microsoft\Windows\DataCollection is the location the AllowTelemetry value is set if it is configured by policy (i.e., InTune, ConfigMgr, Group Policy, etc.)

HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Policies\DataCollection is the location the AllowTelemetry value is set when you make a change via the UI

The first will have precedence over the second. If you have no entry in the first location (which consumer devices shouldn't), it means your device does not have a policy applied to that device for that setting from a management tool.

    HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Policies\DataCollection

If you do not have such a Registry key, then just create it. You might have to clear out the values for the first key above.

There you need to create a new a 32-bit DWORD value named AllowTelemetry and set it to one of the following values.

0 - Security Diagnostic Data Off

1 - Basic Required Diagnostic Data

    2 - Enhanced (Value Removed)

3 - Full Optional Diagnostic Data

    Regards,

    Hi Lufi Garrido,

I’d approach this by first identifying what is applying the restriction, since the “managed by your organization” message can also appear on a personal PC when a local policy or privacy utility has changed the diagnostic-data setting.

Could you please check the following?

    • Open Settings > Accounts > Access work or school and let us know whether any account or management connection is listed there. If you find an account you no longer use, select it and choose Disconnect, then restart the PC.
    • Press Windows key + R, enter gpedit.msc, and open: Computer Configuration > Administrative Templates > Windows Components > Data Collection and Preview Builds. Check whether Allow Diagnostic Data or Configure diagnostic data opt-in settings user interface shows Enabled or Disabled instead of Not Configured. Please let me know what you find before changing anything.
    • Consider whether you have recently used a privacy, debloating, telemetry-blocking, antivirus, or system-tuning tool. These applications can apply a local policy even when the device is not connected to an organization.

Also, please share the full Windows edition, version, and OS build shown after pressing Windows key + R and entering winver. Make sure the screenshot does not include your product key, email address, or device ID.

Windows Insider builds require Send optional diagnostic data to remain enabled. Once the policy or management connection responsible for the restriction has been identified and removed, restart the device, return to Settings > Privacy & security > Diagnostics & feedback, and try enabling the option again. You can then check Settings > Windows Update for a new Insider build.

I would avoid deleting broad Registry branches at this stage. It is safer to identify the specific policy first, especially since the device is already enrolled in the Beta Channel.

Thank you so much for your understanding.

Windows Insider Preview builds require optional diagnostic data to be turned on. The screenshots show that Windows is treating that setting as managed by policy, which is why the toggle is unavailable and Insider builds are blocked.

    Use this order:

    1. Go to Settings > Privacy & security > Diagnostics & feedback.
      • Send optional diagnostic data must be On.
      • If it is Off and cannot be changed, the setting is being controlled by policy.
    2. Confirm Insider prerequisites:
      • Windows 11 is required.
      • Windows must be activated at Settings > System > Activation.
      • In Settings > Windows Update > Windows Insider Program, confirm the device is enrolled and the Beta channel is selected.
    3. Check for updates manually:
      • Go to Settings > Windows Update.
      • Select Check for updates.
    4. If the optional diagnostic data toggle is still locked, the accepted Microsoft Q&A guidance for this exact symptom is:
      • Delete the registry key: HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\WindowsSelfHost
      • Restart the PC.
      • Then go back to Settings > Windows Update > Windows Insider Program and link the device again.
Warning: editing the registry can affect system configuration. Back up the registry or create a restore point first.
    5. If the problem is specifically that diagnostic data is being forced Off by policy, the accepted Microsoft Q&A guidance identifies these registry locations related to the telemetry setting:
      • HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Policies\Microsoft\Windows\DataCollection
      • HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Policies\DataCollection
The policy path has precedence over the UI-controlled path. The same accepted guidance states that preview build flighting requires the device to be set to Full diagnostic data.
    6. After correcting the setting, restart the device and return to:
      • Settings > Privacy & security > Diagnostics & feedback to verify Send optional diagnostic data is On
      • Settings > Windows Update to install the latest Insider build
    7. If updates still do not appear, check:
      • whether the device is already on the latest build for that channel
      • known issues for the current or next build
      • whether a clean install is needed as a last resort
