Inquiry regarding client Windows 10/11 OS license availability for Azure for Students subscription

Dear Microsoft Academic Support Team,

I am an active student at Uzhhorod National University (Ukraine), using my institutional account: ******@student.uzhnu.edu.ua.

Recently, I successfully renewed my academic status and activated my "Azure for Students" subscription on the Azure Portal (Education Hub). My account sponsorship has been extended for another 365-day term, and the active credit has been correctly provisioned.

However, upon navigating to the "Learning Resources -> Software" deployment section, I encountered a catalog limitation. The current software repository lists exclusively Windows Server distributions, SQL database systems, and various developer utility packages. The standard desktop client operating systems (such as Windows 10/11 Education or Windows 10/11 Pro) are completely absent from the available deployment options.

Given the deployment requirements for my academic workload and software testing environments, could you please clarify the following:

  1. Is an individual, retail-type product key for a client desktop OS (Windows 10/11 Education/Pro) included as a built-in benefit within the standard "Azure for Students" subscription tier for our institutional tenant?
  2. If desktop client OS licenses are provisioned on-demand, could you please advise on the correct procedure or alternative academic portal (such as OnTheHub/Kivuto) where my institutional tenant metadata can be authenticated to retrieve a valid client OS deployment key?

Thank you for your technical assistance and time.

Best regards,

Anatolii Zhyr

Student of Uzhhorod National University

    Welcome to Microsoft Q&A,

@Анатолій Анатолійович Жир I hope you are doing well,

There are two separate benefits here:

    • Windows 10/11 Azure VMs: Azure for Students allows you to deploy Windows 10 and Windows 11 virtual machines without requiring a separate Windows 11 Enterprise license.

Windows 10/11 Education software download/license: Windows 10 and Windows 11 for Education are listed under Azure Dev Tools for Teaching, which is an institution-level program. They are not part of the standard Azure for Students software catalog for every student.

Therefore, the fact that you only see Windows Server, SQL Server, and developer tools in the Education Hub does not indicate that your Azure for Students subscription is missing a Windows client VM entitlement.

If your university participates in Azure Dev Tools for Teaching, students can download the available software through the Education Hub using their institutional credentials. Microsoft also states that the available software is determined by the institution's Azure Dev Tools for Teaching subscription.

I would recommend contacting your university's IT/academic licensing administrator to confirm whether Uzhhorod National University provides Windows 10/11 Education through Azure Dev Tools for Teaching. I would not recommend obtaining a product key from an unofficial source or assuming that OnTheHub/Kivuto is required unless your university specifically uses that platform.

For your immediate Azure VM testing, you can use the Windows 10/11 images available through Azure without purchasing a separate Windows client license, subject to the Azure for Students offer terms.
