Run a malware scan on the phone with Microsoft Defender:
- Open Microsoft Defender.
- Go to Device details > Device protection.
- Tap Malware protection.
- Tap Scan.
- If malware is found, Defender will block it, notify about it, and try to remove it.
Remove suspicious apps:
- On the device, uninstall apps that are not recognized or no longer needed.
- If using a work-managed mobile threat defense app, open the app, review the threat details, make the required changes, and uninstall any app identified as unsafe.
- After making changes, start a new scan in the threat defense app and repeat until all threats are resolved.
If the problem is tied to a recent app install, remove recently added apps first.
If an app will not install or reinstall correctly from Google Play while trying to clean up the device:
- Open Settings.
- Go to one of these account areas, depending on the device: Users & accounts, Passwords, passkeys & autofill, Password, passkeys & accounts, or Manage accounts.
- Tap the account to remove, then tap Remove account.
- Confirm with Delete.
- Restart the phone, add the account again, and try the download again.
If the phone is enrolled by a workplace or school, access to work apps can be blocked until the threat is cleared. In that case, use the mobile threat defense app and, if needed, contact the organization’s IT support through the Company Portal website.
If suspicious apps are simply unwanted software, uninstall them from the device settings. On supported devices, unwanted software can sometimes be removed through Settings by selecting the app and choosing Uninstall.
