CoPilot is now splitting chats

I'm trying to continue ongoing chats in CoPilot. I'm only using one platform and of course, I'm signed in under my account. When I go to the chat to continue it, I see after the fact that it has now become an entirely new chat. Is anyone else experiencing that and is there a resolution?

    Hello Rick Park,

If you reopen an existing conversation from your Copilot Chat history, you should normally be able to continue that conversation rather than intentionally starting over.

Could you check two things for me?

    • Does this happen with every existing chat, or only one particular conversation?
    • Are you opening the conversation directly from Chat history, rather than from a shared conversation link?

I ask because Microsoft documents that continuing from a shared conversation creates a separate copy, while I couldn’t verify that the behavior you described is an expected result of chat syncing or migration.

If this happens consistently with normal conversations opened directly from Chat history, I’d suggest reporting it through Settings > Feedback in Copilot, since that would help Microsoft investigate the behavior.

This can happen in the updated Copilot experience when chats are still moving or syncing. Microsoft notes that devices can temporarily show different chats, some chats or content can appear missing, and functionality gaps can occur while the latest version rolls out.

    Try these steps:

    1. Verify the account used in Copilot. Make sure the same sign-in method is being used consistently. If the account was originally used with Google or Apple sign-in, the matching Continue with Google or Continue with Apple option must be used.
    2. Restart Copilot. Close the app completely and reopen it. On the web, refresh the page.
    3. Check for in-app messages. If content is still being moved, Copilot can show a link to access existing chats while migration finishes.
    4. Wait and try again later. Microsoft states that moving chats and content can take time depending on the amount and type of content.
    5. If this is a notebook chat on mobile, open it from chat history. In the Microsoft Copilot app: Menu > Chat > History, then select the notebook chat to continue it.

    Also note:

    • For personal accounts, Microsoft has merged older Copilot experiences into the updated Copilot app.
    • Work/school and personal experiences remain separate by design, and data does not flow between them.
    • Some retired features do not carry forward, but normal chats and most eligible content should move over.
