Using Classic Outlook on Windows for personal email, calendar, and contact management
This usually happens when Outlook is treating the sign-in as a Microsoft 365 app activation/account state problem instead of just an email sign-in.
For a home scenario, the supported checks from the available guidance are:
- Sign in with the correct account for Microsoft 365
- If Microsoft 365 was purchased with a different personal email address, sign in with that account instead.
- If the Microsoft 365 product or subscription is not associated with the account being used, Outlook can keep prompting for activation.
- The account used for Microsoft 365 apps is the account tied to the license.
- Check whether multiple Office installations are causing activation failure
- In Windows 11/10: open Control Panel > Programs > Programs and Features.
- Search for office.
- If more than one version of Microsoft 365 or Office is installed, uninstall the version not being used.
- Restart the PC.
- Open an Office app again and sign in.
- Create a new Outlook profile
- Exit Outlook.
- Open Control Panel > Mail.
- Select Show Profiles > Add.
- Enter a new profile name and complete the Add Account wizard.
- In Mail, set Always use this profile to the new profile.
- This can fix account/profile state issues when Outlook is stuck in a sign-in loop.
- If Outlook keeps prompting for credentials in older affected Outlook versions
- Exit Outlook.
- Open Control Panel > Mail > Show Profiles > select the profile > Properties > E-mail Accounts.
- Select the email account > Change > More Settings.
- On the Security tab, set Logon network security to Anonymous Authentication.
- Finish the wizard and reopen Outlook.
- This applies to older affected Outlook versions. Newer Outlook 2016 and some newer Outlook 2013 builds are noted as not affected by this specific setting issue.
- If the mailbox was migrated to Microsoft 365 and Outlook still cannot connect
- Create a new Outlook profile first.
- Another documented option is setting the registry value ExcludeLastKnownGoodUrl=1 under the Outlook Autodiscover key.
- Warning: registry changes are risky; incorrect edits can affect Outlook or Windows behavior.
A key account behavior to keep in mind: Microsoft 365 apps do not support being signed in with multiple user accounts from the same Microsoft 365 organization or tenant at the same time. One account may need to be signed out before another can be used.
