Using Classic Outlook on Windows for personal email, calendar, and contact management
For classic Outlook for Windows, the fastest checks are:
- Check whether the data is still on the mail server.
- Sign in to Outlook on the web or Outlook.com for the same account.
- If the mail and contacts are visible there, the issue is likely with the Outlook profile, sync, or local data display.
- Check whether the items were deleted and can be restored.
- In Outlook, open Deleted Items.
- If contacts were deleted and are no longer in Deleted Items, in classic Outlook go to Deleted Items > Home > Recover Deleted Items From Server.
- Recovered contacts are moved back to Deleted Items, and from there they can be moved to the Contacts folder.
- Check whether contacts are in the wrong Contacts folder.
- In some cases, Outlook shows an empty Contacts folder while the actual contacts are in another folder with the same name.
- If a second contacts folder contains the contacts, drag them from that folder to the active Contacts folder.
- If this happened after reinstalling Windows or Outlook, look for an old Outlook data file.
- Check these locations in File Explorer:
-
C:\Users\<YourUsername>\Documents\Outlook Files\ -
C:\Users\<YourUsername>\AppData\Local\Microsoft\Outlook\
-
- Look for a
.pstfile. - In classic Outlook, open File > Open & Export > Open Outlook Data File and select the
.pstfile. - This can restore old mail, contacts, calendar items, and folders stored in that file.
- Check these locations in File Explorer:
- If folders appear empty only in Outlook desktop, verify whether Outlook is showing the correct mailbox data.
- If webmail still has the data, re-adding the account or opening the correct data file may be required.
If the mailbox is also empty on the web, the most relevant recovery path from the available guidance is checking Deleted Items and Recover Deleted Items From Server.
For direct help in Outlook.com, use Help on the menu bar, enter the issue, and if needed go to Still need help? and select Yes.
