My Dell laptop was an old company computer and now I am getting a message that I need a new product key. Not sure why this is so difficult to obtain a new product key but can't figure out how to do this. Thank you.

I would suspect the licence from the company is a volume licence but being a Dell laptop it will have an OEM licence embedded in the bios.
To use the embedded licence you will probably need to clean install windows wiping all the current data and any personal files.
The screenshot requested will help determine the best advice to give.
Is it a business computer that is now for personal use? Does the company still exist?
One potential cause is, the computer was on a volume license, and the license is already expired.
Can you please type cmd in the search on the taskbar and hit enter to launch command prompt, then run the following command:
slmgr /dlv
