To update to Windows 10, use one of these supported paths from the available guidance:

    1. Check the current Windows version:
      • In the taskbar search box, type winver.
      • Select Winver to open About Windows.
    2. If already on Windows 10:
      • Open Start > Settings > Update & Security > Windows Update.
      • Install available updates.
      • If a notification appears saying the device must install the latest security updates, leave the PC plugged in and powered on while the download completes, then restart when prompted.
    3. If Windows Update fails repeatedly:
      • Use the Windows 10 Media Creation Tool and choose Upgrade this PC now for a repair install / in-place upgrade.
      • By default, apps, settings, and files are kept.
    4. If upgrading from a much older Windows 10 release and normal methods fail:
      • Download the latest Windows 10 ISO using the Media Creation Tool.
      • Disconnect from the Internet.
      • Disconnect external devices except mouse and keyboard.
      • Temporarily disable third-party antivirus.
      • In File Explorer, open the ISO and run Setup.exe.
      • Select the option to keep files and apps.
      • Ensure at least 40 GB of free space on the C: drive.
    5. If using a Surface device and a downgrade or reinstall is needed:
      • Back up important data first.
      • Download the correct recovery image for the device.
      • After installation, check drivers and run Windows Update again.

Note: A clean install can remove data if the wrong install option is chosen. Back up important files before reinstalling or using recovery media.
