Apple Numbers uses its own file format, so if the spreadsheet is currently a .numbers file, it should first be exported to an Excel-compatible format from Numbers, then opened in Excel. This will create an .xlsx copy of the spreadsheet. As mentioned here:

Once the exported .xlsx file is opened in the desktop version of Excel, it should normally be editable. Please note that some Numbers-specific features or formatting may not translate exactly to Excel during the conversion.
