Sole Global Administrator locked out of Azure – MFA asks for 6-digit code but Authenticator only provides 8-digit code
I am currently locked out of my Azure account/tenant because of an MFA issue.
I use a personal Microsoft account to access Azure and, as far as I know, I am the only administrator / Global Administrator with access to this Azure environment.
Problem
After entering my username and password in the Azure Portal, Microsoft gives me two authentication options:
Approve a request on my Microsoft Authenticator app
Use a verification code
The first option does not work because no notification/request arrives in Microsoft Authenticator.
When I select "Use a verification code", Azure asks me to enter a 6-digit code.
However, Microsoft Authenticator only shows my Microsoft account with an 8-digit one-time password. I no longer appear to have the Azure/Entra MFA registration in Authenticator that Azure is expecting.
Troubleshooting already performed
I have already tried:
"Approve a request on my Microsoft Authenticator app" → no request arrives.
"Use a verification code" → Azure requires 6 digits, while Authenticator only provides an 8-digit code.
aka.ms/mfasetup → returns: "You can't sign in here with a personal account. Use your work or school account instead."
Microsoft 365 Admin Center → returns: "Switch to an account that has permission. Login is not supported for consumer users without business presence."
Azure CLI (az account show) → there is no existing authenticated session that I can use.
I still have full access to the personal Microsoft account and its associated email address.
I also have recent emails from Microsoft regarding this Azure subscription and have the Azure Subscription ID. I can provide the Subscription ID and any available billing/account information privately for ownership verification.
Assistance required
Because I appear to be the sole administrator and have no working alternative MFA method, I cannot reset the Azure/Entra MFA registration myself.
Could a Microsoft moderator/support engineer please help me open or escalate this as a Data Protection / Tenant Recovery case for a sole Global Administrator MFA lockout?
I can provide my Subscription ID, account details, contact information and other proof of ownership privately.
Thank you.
