For Teams Free, sign in with a personal Microsoft account after installing the current Teams app. If Skype, OneDrive, Outlook.com, or Xbox Live is already used, that Microsoft account can be used for Teams Free.
Try this order:
- Remove the broken classic taskbar shortcut when prompted. A shortcut that points to a moved or deleted classic app does not install the new app.
- Install the current Teams app again from the Teams download flow. Both Teams Free and work or school Teams are available in the current app.
- After installation, open Teams and sign in with the personal Microsoft account to use Teams Free.
- In Teams, check the installed version:
- Settings and more > Settings > About Teams
- Under Version, confirm whether it is current or whether Update now appears.
- If Teams shows Update and restart in the title bar, select it. That behavior is expected.
- If the app still does not install or open on Windows 10, install WebView2 Runtime, then restart the Teams desktop app and try again.
- If the Try the new Teams toggle is missing or the app behaves inconsistently, fully quit Teams, then clear the local Teams cache:
- Right-click the Teams icon in the taskbar and select Quit.
- Open File Explorer and go to
%appdata%/Microsoft/Teams
- Delete the folder contents. If a file cannot be deleted, select Skip.
- Restart Teams, quit it once more, then restart it again.
If installation is blocked with a message like Due to org policy, you can't install the new Teams, that is caused by Windows policy settings and requires the device settings to allow packaged app installation.
