When pasting images into Teams, what size do they have to be to not be placed in a larger grey box?

For example, I pasted this cut-down screenshot into a Chat post in MS Teams, and Teams put it inside a grey container.
It's not specific to 'Chat'; the same occurs in 'Teams and Channels'.

Hi Nev,

There does not appear to be a documented pixel size that guarantees an image will be displayed without the grey container. Microsoft Teams automatically determines the size and layout of pasted-image previews, and there is currently no setting to control or remove that container.

This commonly affects small or narrow images, such as the cropped screenshot in your example. As a workaround, you can try:

  1. Add blank space to both sides of the image before pasting it. Increasing the image’s width may prevent the large grey container from appearing.
  2. Save and attach the screenshot by selecting Actions and apps > Attach file > Upload from this device, rather than pasting it directly. Teams will generate a preview, but it may be displayed differently. For reference: Send a file, picture, or link in Microsoft Teams.
  3. Click the posted image to view it at full size. The preview’s size and appearance are determined automatically by Teams and cannot currently be customized.

Since Teams currently does not provide manual controls for pasted-image preview dimensions, I strongly recommend submitting your suggestion through the Microsoft 365 Feedback Hub. This is the most effective way to ensure your feedback reaches the product team and is considered for future improvements.
