How to Fix Computer Restarting / Updating when I close my laptop lid?

Hello,

My Surface laptop running Windows 11 has been restarting after an extended period of time (12-14 hours) with the lid closed. I am certain it is restarting because when I open the lid, the windows bootup screen shows and then the blue lock screen that shows up before you log in for the first time on startup. Furthermore, all of my tabs and programs are closed. Perhaps the laptop is somehow crashing because Chrome suggests that it did not close correctly, but I am not positive what's going on. Any help would be greatly appreciated. Thank you!

Open Event Viewer, go to Windows Logs > System, and look for a Kernel-Power event with Event ID 41 around the time of the restart. Click it and check the 'BugcheckCode' field — if it's 0, that usually points to a battery/power cutoff (Modern Standby drain or thermal shutdown) rather than a driver crash. A non-zero bugcheck code means an actual crash occurred.

Search 'View reliability history' in the Start menu. Look at the timeline for the day/time of the restart — it will show whether it logged as an unexpected shutdown, a Windows Update install, or a specific application/driver failure. This often names the exact culprit.

Run 'powercfg /batteryreport' in an elevated Command Prompt, then open the generated HTML report and look at the 'Usage history' section for overnight periods. If the battery is dropping several percent per hour with the lid closed, Modern Standby isn't idling properly and is a strong candidate.

    Try these checks in order:

    1. Verify what closing the lid does.
      • Right-click Start > Power Options > Additional power settings.
      • Select Choose what closing the lid does.
      • Make sure the lid-close action is set to Sleep, not Shut down.
    2. Install the latest Windows and Surface updates.
      • Go to Start > Settings > Windows Update > Check for updates.
      • Install all available updates. For Surface Laptop 7th Edition, recent updates include fixes for black screen on restart, wake behavior, and system stability during sleep or power-state transitions.
    3. Disconnect accessories before testing.
      • Unplug USB devices, SD cards, external monitors, docks, Type Cover, and other accessories.
      • Some connected accessories or docks can interfere with startup or wake behavior.
    4. If the device appears unresponsive when opening the lid, try the display reset shortcut.
      • Press Windows logo key + Ctrl + Shift + B.
    5. If the problem continues, check for stop code behavior.
      • Unexpected restarts in Windows can be caused by hardware, drivers, or software.
      • If a blue or black screen appears before restart, note the stop code shown on screen.
    6. Use the standard Windows restart troubleshooting steps.
      • Remove any newly added hardware.
      • Start in safe mode if needed.
      • Open Device Manager from the Start button menu and look for devices with an exclamation mark. Update the driver, or if needed disable or uninstall the affected device.
      • Make sure the drive has enough free space; 10% to 15% free space is recommended.
    7. If the issue started recently and continues after updates, use recovery options.
      • Restore Windows using a restore point or another recovery option from Recovery options in Windows 11.
    8. If the Surface gets stuck on a logo screen after opening the lid, force a restart.
      • Press and hold the power button until the logo screen appears, about 20 seconds.
      • Use this only when necessary, because holding the power button interrupts normal shutdown.

If the device is specifically shutting down after long lid-closed periods, the most relevant first actions are: confirm the lid action is Sleep, install all Windows/Surface updates, and test again with all accessories disconnected.
