Using Classic Outlook on Windows for personal email, calendar, and contact management
Hi Mark Gluesenkamp,
To better understand the issue, could you provide a few more details?
- What type of account are you adding: Outlook.com/Hotmail, Microsoft 365 work or school, Gmail, iCloud or another provider?
- Can you sign in to the account through its webmail page?
- Did this start after removing the account, changing the password, updating Office or making another change?
- Which Outlook version are you using? You can check under File > Office Account > About Outlook.
- What troubleshooting steps have you already tried?
If this is a Microsoft 365 work or school account, open the Get Help app on the affected Windows PC, search for Set up Microsoft 365 email in Outlook and follow the prompts. This troubleshooter is specifically provided for setting up Microsoft 365 email in Classic Outlook and requires Windows 10 or later - Classic Outlook troubleshooters.
If you’re adding Gmail, iCloud or another third-party account, please let me know which provider you use before changing any settings. The requirements vary by provider, and some accounts may require an app password or specific server settings from the email provider.
If you haven’t already tested a new Outlook profile, hold Shift while starting Outlook, select Options > New, and then try adding the account. This lets you test a fresh profile without immediately removing the existing one.
Feel free to skip anything you’ve already tried. Once you share the details above, I’ll help you work out the most suitable next step.
