How to fix sandbox:/ file link issue when downloading updated files in chat?

Hi,

I am unable to download files generated in the chat session. When I click on the provided download link, it redirects or gives a sandbox:/ path format (e.g., sandbox:/ISO_14001_2026_Factory_2_Environmental_Aspect_Evaluation_Academic_Updated.xlsx), which cannot be accessed or opened by standard web browsers.

Could you please check why file download links are generating internal sandbox paths instead of direct downloadable attachments/URLs?

Thank you!

    Hi,

Regarding your concern, the sandbox:/ path is an internal, temporary file reference used during file generation. It is not a public URL, so copying or opening it directly in a browser will not work. Normally, the chat should present the generated file as a downloadable attachment instead of exposing the internal path.

I suggest returning to the original chat and asking Copilot to generate the file again using this prompt: "Please recreate the updated workbook and attach it directly to the chat as a downloadable .xlsx file. Do not provide a sandbox path or placeholder link." Then, download the file immediately after it is generated, because generated files may only remain available for a limited time. If the issue continues, test in an InPrivate or Incognito browser window.

If the issue persists even after regenerating the file in a private browser session, at this time, you need to contact your company's IT department and ask your administrator to check organizational controls:

    • Verify whether you have appropriate Copilot and Microsoft 365 licensing.
    • Downloads are not blocked by Conditional Access, Defender for Cloud Apps, browser session controls, or endpoint policies.
    • SharePoint and OneDrive access is available.

If you do not know who your IT admin is, kindly refer to this article: How do I find my Microsoft 365 admin? - Microsoft Support

Please give it a try and let me know the outcome. Should you have any further questions, please feel free to share them in the comment below. I'm very happy to help.
