I'm seeing a similar behavior in Word (Version 2609, Build 20430.20146, Current Channel). I find that the horizontal scroll bar appears when I set the zoom slightly larger -- the numeric value depends on the width chosen for the Word window. Also, it's visible only while the mouse cursor is within the text area, not in the ribbon, the ruler, the QAT, or the status bar.

    Hi Roxanne,

Regarding your concern, if by “minimize” you mean reducing the size of the Word window, the horizontal scrollbar may disappear because Word only displays it when the document is wider than the available editing area. The "Show horizontal scroll bar" option means Word is permitted to show the bar. It does not necessarily force the bar to stay permanently visible when the page fits within the window, when Word lacks focus, or when Windows is configured to hide scrollbars.

That said, for the best possible assistance, please share a screenshot of the problem you're experiencing so I can clearly understand the situation and provide appropriate guidance.

Should you have any further questions, please feel free to share them in the comment below. I'm very happy to help.

If Show horizontal scroll bar is already enabled in Word, try these Windows and window-state fixes:

    1. In Word, confirm the setting again at File > Options > Advanced > Display and make sure Show horizontal scroll bar is selected.
    2. In Windows, turn off automatic scrollbar hiding:
      • Start > Settings
      • Ease of Access > Display
      • Set Automatically hide scroll bars in Windows to Off
    3. Restore the Word window after minimizing:
      • Right-click the Word title bar and select Maximize
      • Right-click the title bar again and select Restore

If the bar still disappears only when the document window is minimized or resized, that points to the app window state rather than the Word option itself. Restoring the window is the documented next step.

For VBA-controlled Word windows, the horizontal scrollbar can also be forced on with DisplayHorizontalScrollBar = True for the active window.
