For Excel copy/paste issues on Windows, use this troubleshooting path:

    1. Check the paste target size and shape
      • If the copied range and paste range do not match, paste can fail.
      • Either select only the top-left destination cell before pasting, or select a destination range with the exact same number of rows and columns as the copied data.
    2. Make sure the destination has enough columns
      • If pasting wide data, insert additional columns first, then paste again.
    3. Check cell format when pasting large amounts of data
      • If large pasted content fails, make sure the destination column format matches the source data format.
      • In Excel, select the column, go to Home > Number Format, and choose the matching format.
    4. If Paste Special is missing or not working
      • Go to File > Options > Advanced.
      • Under Cut, copy and paste, make sure Show Paste Options button when content is pasted is enabled.
    5. Test for add-in conflicts
      • Third-party add-ins can block or interfere with copy/paste.
      • Start Excel in Safe Mode:
        • Find the Excel icon.
        • Press and hold CTRL and double-click Excel.
        • Select Yes to open in Safe Mode.
      • If copy/paste works in Safe Mode, disable add-ins one by one until the conflicting add-in is found.
    6. Close web browsers and try again
      • Browser processes can conflict with Paste Special in some cases.
      • Close all browser windows, then test paste again.
    7. Avoid using multiple Excel instances for copy/paste
      • If files are open in different Excel instances, Excel may not use its internal paste functionality correctly.
      • Open both workbooks in the same Excel instance and try again.
      • This is especially important if Paste Special options such as Formulas, Values, or Formats are unavailable.
    8. If automation or add-ins use clipboard operations
      • Running multiple Excel instances in parallel while add-ins or automation perform clipboard copy/paste can cause errors or crashes.
      • Avoid parallel Excel instances for clipboard-based tasks. If possible, use methods that do not rely on the clipboard.

If the issue is happening after an update and even basic cut/copy/paste fails in the same workbook, an Online Repair of Office was suggested in a similar case.

    Hi @Saddiq Basha

To help narrow down the issue, could you please confirm the following:

    • When you mention Excel 2026, are you referring to Excel 2016?
    • Are Excel 2016, 2019, and 2021 installed on separate computers?
    • Did the Copy and Paste issue begin immediately after installing a Windows or Office update?
    • Does it occur in all workbooks, including a new blank workbook?
    • Does Copy and Paste work normally in other applications, such as Word or Notepad?
    • Have you already tried repairing Office, including both Quick Repair and Online Repair? Please refer to: Repair an Office application
    • Also, could you try uninstalling and reinstalling Office to see if it helps with your issue.

Several users have reported a similar Copy and Paste issue in Excel 2016 after installing KB5002914. You can refer to this discussion for more information:

Some affected users have reported that rolling back or uninstalling the recent update temporarily restored the Copy and Paste function. If the issue started immediately after KB5002914 was installed, you may consider trying this workaround, preferably with assistance from your IT administrator.

You can follow the steps outlined here: Go back to the previous version of Windows

The same behavior has not yet been clearly documented for Excel 2019 and Excel 2021. Since you are also experiencing it in those versions, please consider submitting a report from each affected installation through Excel > Help > Feedback > Report a Problem. Please include the full Excel version and build number, the date the issue started, and whether it appeared immediately after an update.

    User's image

In addition to submitting feedback through Excel, you may also report the issue through the Feedback Hub app in Windows.

    • Press Windows key + F or search for Feedback Hub in the Start menu.
    • Sign in with your Microsoft account.
    • Click Report a Problem
    • Add screenshots if possible.

For more details, please refer to: Send feedback to Microsoft with the Feedback Hub app

When you submit feedback there, your idea becomes visible to others who may be experiencing the same issue. If other users agree with your suggestion, they can upvote it, which helps highlight the need and increases its visibility

Please note that I’m a fellow forum user and am not directly involved in Microsoft’s product development or investigation process. However, your feedback is important, and submitting it through Excel > Help > Feedback > Report a Problem can help bring this issue to the attention of the appropriate product team.

Feel free to share the requested details when convenient. I look forward to hearing from you.

    Hi @Saddiq Basha,

Based on the information provided in the Microsoft support article, an issue causing the paste operation to fail has been identified in Excel 2024, 2021, 2019, and 2016. The article notes that the issue remains under investigation and that additional details will be published as they become available: Description of the security update for Excel 2016: September 08, 2026 (KB5002914)

In the meantime, you may consider rolling back the update, if possible, to see whether it helps. As previously suggested, you may also submit feedback through Excel to ensure that your experience is reported. I will continue to follow the support article and update this thread should any relevant announcements or further guidance become available.

Please note that I am a fellow community member and cannot provide a timeframe for when the issue may be resolved.

for me the issue is on Office 2019 64bit build ver 16.0.10417.20207

I was able to revert to previous build by running:

    "C:\Program Files\Common Files\Microsoft Shared\ClickToRun\OfficeC2RClient.exe" /update user updatetoversion=16.0.10417.20197

also 32bit office seems to be without issue

This is a known issue due to a recent update. See article https://support.microsoft.com/en-us/servicing/office/hotfix/excel/5002914

For now, two options as workaround.

Please type cmd in the search on the taskbar. Don't press enter key yet. Instead, choose "run as administrator" to launch Command Prompt.

Then run this command (for Office 2016)

    "C:\Program Files\Common Files\Microsoft Shared\OFFICE16\Oarpmany.exe" /removereleaseinpatch "{90160000-0012-0000-1000-0000000FF1CE}" "{27882596-A8ED-4382-9C71-6CD2DD19F732}" "1033" "0"

    For 2019

    "C:\Program Files\Common Files\Microsoft Shared\ClickToRun\OfficeC2RClient.exe" /update user updatetoversion=16.0.10417.20197

    For 2021

    "C:\Program Files\Common Files\Microsoft Shared\ClickToRun\OfficeC2RClient.exe" /update user updatetoversion=16.0.20326.20132

The command is to remove the latest update, which is causing this issue.

    Or

Use Ctrl+X (cut), then use Ctrl+Z to re-add the data, then use Ctrl+V after that. this can be a workaround.
