Im trying to start the Windows Update Service on services but it keeps on saying Windows could not start the Windows Update Service on Local Computer

Seriously, I've tried every tutorial i could find but nothing worked. I dont know what else to do. Please help me!

Note: I'm on Windows 10 and I cannot get Windows 11 at the moment right now.

If Windows Update or a related service fails to start, it's a good idea to check for and eliminate malware/miners. Please share your Farbar scan logs for analysis.

Download Farbar Recovery Scan Tool 64-bit FRST64.exe

If the OS language is not English, rename FRST64.exe to FRST64English.exe.

Run the program. Don't check or uncheck any options. Click "Scan".

Add the two logs, FRST.txt and Addition.txt, to a zip archive.

Share the zip file on OneDrive or GoFile.io, and post the link here.

Note: If Microsoft Edge or Chrome mislabels the Farbar Scanner executable as PUA/malware, choose to keep it by tapping … in the bottom bar, choosing Keep, and then choosing Keep anyway in the dialog that appears. See this screenshot. It's a safe tool used in most antimalware forums.

Steps to Create a New Backup

Extract the RegBak package, right-click regbak64.exe (or the appropriate executable for your system), and select Run as administrator.

Click the New backup button and choose where you want to save the backup files.

Type an optional description to help you identify the backup later.

Click Click here to view details and check the box for Select hives not loaded by Windows to make sure all critical system parts are included.

Click OK and then press Start to run the backup process until you see the "Finished successfully" message. [1, 2]

Unless you install apps of questionable reputation, Windows Update will work correctly. The fixlist remoevd two miners that were causing the problem.

I suggest you to do repair by reinstall same version. Check below link from Microsoft for instructions:

It says the process preserves apps, data, etc., but I still recommend backing up your important data just in case something goes wrong.

Hello Error 1083 usually means the Windows Update service configuration is incorrect or the service registration is damaged.

Please try resetting the Windows Update service registration:

Open Command Prompt as administrator.
Run these commands:


sc config wuauserv type= share

sc config wuauserv binPath= "C:\Windows\system32\svchost.exe -k netsvcs -p"

Restart your computer and try starting the Windows Update service again.

If the issue remains, please run:


reg query "HKLM\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Services\wuauserv"

and share the result, especially the ImagePath value. This will confirm whether the Windows Update service entry is corrupted.

Hello, for the command prompts, it keeps on saying the system cannot find the specified... i tried reg query and it said The system was unable to find the specified registry key or value...I also forgot to mention that my mouse started to stutter a bit as soon as this started happening and it would delay my clicks..

Since you have already tried the usual Windows Update reset steps, I suggest checking for damaged Windows system files first.

Open Command Prompt as administrator and run:

DISM /Online /Cleanup-Image /RestoreHealth

Then run:

sfc /scannow

Restart the PC and try starting the Windows Update service again.

If it still cannot start, please tell me the exact error number/message shown after “Windows could not start the Windows Update service” (for example, Error 5, 1058, 1068, etc.). That error number is important for determining the next step.

It still wont work. The error message is 1083.... It says the executable service is configured to run does not implement the service.
