This usually happens because the monitor’s built-in camera needs a USB data connection to the laptop. HDMI or DisplayPort by itself only carries video/audio and will not make the monitor’s webcam available to Windows. If you give me the brand and exact model number of the monitor, I can tell you exactly which cable/port you need to make its camera work.

2026-08-15T17:36:29.6633333+00:00 Try this in order:
- Check the monitor camera connection.
- If the monitor camera connects through USB, make sure the USB cable from the monitor is connected securely to the laptop, not just the display cable.
- If possible, try a different USB port on the laptop.
- To rule out a hardware issue, test the monitor camera on another device.
- Check for a physical camera switch, shutter, or keyboard button.
- Some devices and monitors have a privacy shutter or camera on/off control.
- Look for:
- a sliding switch on the side
- a keyboard button with a camera icon
- a small slider built into the camera
- Run the Windows camera troubleshooter.
- On Windows 11, start the automated camera troubleshooter in the Get Help app.
- Scan for hardware changes in Device Manager.
- Open Device Manager.
- Look under Cameras, Imaging devices, or Sound, video and game controllers.
- If the monitor camera is missing, select Action > Scan for hardware changes.
- Restart the device and test the Camera app again.
- Update or reinstall the camera driver.
- In Device Manager, right-click the camera and select Update driver.
- If needed, open the camera Properties > Driver tab and use Uninstall Device.
- Then select Action > Scan for hardware changes, restart, and test again.
- If it is an external USB webcam, switch it to the Windows UVC driver.
- This requires admin rights.
- In Device Manager:
- Right-click the webcam > Update driver
- Browse my computer for drivers
- Let me pick from a list of available drivers on my computer
- Select USB Video Device
- Note: this can reduce camera-specific features, and Windows Hello face recognition may stop working if the manufacturer driver provided that support.
- If the monitor camera still is not detected, install the latest monitor, dock, and camera-related drivers or firmware from the monitor or PC manufacturer.
If the camera still does not appear in Device Manager after scanning for hardware changes and trying the driver steps, that usually points to a hardware-level issue with the monitor camera, its USB connection, or related firmware.
