Since the device is on an expiring Insider Preview build, the first path is to let Windows Update finish if it has moved from 0% to active installation. A temporary 0% state can still be followed by a normal install attempt.
If the update does not complete successfully, use this order:
- Check whether the device is already on the latest build for that channel. Insider settings can sometimes show a newer build message even when no newer build is actually available for the current channel.
- In Settings > Windows Update, select Check for updates again and keep the device powered on and signed in during off-hours so the install can continue.
- In Settings > Windows Update > Windows Insider Program, confirm that Insider is active on the device and that a channel is selected.
- In Settings > System > Activation, confirm Windows is activated. Insider Preview builds require Windows to be activated.
- Check diagnostic data settings. Insider Preview builds require enough diagnostic data to be enabled to receive builds.
- Check recent known issues for the current flight, because known issues can block update delivery or installation.
If updates still are not offered or the build keeps failing, the supported recovery path is a clean installation:
- Reset this PC reinstalls Windows on the same build.
- Roll back is available only for up to 10 days after installing the previous build.
- Clean install using an ISO is the full reset option.
Important: a clean install using an Insider ISO or Windows ISO erases files, settings, and applications when Change what to keep > Nothing is selected, so back up data first.
For an expiring build, the documented ways to move off it are:
- switch to the Dev Channel and update from Settings > Update & Security > Windows Insider Program, then Windows Update
- reinstall Windows using a Windows Insider Beta Channel ISO
- start fresh with a clean installation of Windows
If the current install succeeds, the expiration warning should stop once the device is on the newer build.
