Hi Daniel Crockett,
Thank you for reaching out.
The message "Your device is missing important security and quality fixes" usually means that Windows Update has been unable to install one or more updates successfully. This may happen if Windows Update components are corrupted, required services are not running correctly or system files have become damaged.
To help narrow this down, could you let me know when the issue started and whether Windows Update shows any specific error code?
As a first step, please run the Windows Update Troubleshooter. Go to Start > Settings > Update & Security > Troubleshoot > Additional troubleshooters, then select Windows Update and choose Run the troubleshooter. Allow the tool to complete its scan and apply any recommended fixes, then restart your device and check Windows Update again to see if the issue has been resolved. This can automatically detect and fix many common update-related issues.
You can also repair Windows system files by opening Command Prompt as Administrator and running the following commands one at a time:
DISM /Online /Cleanup-Image /RestoreHealth
sfc /scannow
Once the scans have finished, restart your PC and check for updates again. These tools can repair corrupted Windows files and update components that may be preventing updates from installing.
If the issue persists, you can try resetting the Windows Update components. Open Command Prompt as Administrator and run the following commands:
net stop bits
net stop wuauserv
ren %systemroot%\softwaredistribution softwaredistribution.bak
ren %systemroot%\system32\catroot2 catroot2.bak
net start bits
net start wuauserv
Afterward, restart your PC and check for updates again. This forces Windows to recreate its update cache and often resolves issues caused by corrupted update files.
If you've already tried these steps, an in-place repair upgrade may be the next option, as it can repair Windows while keeping your files, settings and applications intact.
Please let me know how it goes. If the issue persists, feel free to share any error messages or update error codes and I'll be happy to help further.
