This behavior is typically caused by issues in Word for Mac’s preferences or user profile rather than the documents themselves.

Try these steps in order and test Word after each step:

    1. Clear AutoRecovery data (removes old recovery sessions that can confuse navigation)
      1. In macOS, open Finder.
      2. On the Go menu, click Home.
      3. Open Documents.
      4. Open Microsoft User Data.
      5. Open the Office Autorecovery folder.
      6. Move the contents of this folder to the desktop (do not delete yet).
      7. Restart Word and test whether jumping to old search terms still occurs.
    2. Reset Word preferences (clears corrupted settings that may affect search/navigation)
      1. Exit all Microsoft Office for Mac programs.
      2. On the Go menu, click Home.
      3. Open Library. If Library is hidden, hold down the OPTION key while clicking the Go menu.
      4. Open Preferences.
      5. Locate the file named com.microsoft.word.plist and move it to the desktop.
      6. Start Word and test search behavior.
        • If the problem persists, quit Word and move com.microsoft.word.plist back.
        • If the problem is resolved, delete the file from the desktop.
      7. Exit Office apps again.
      8. On the Go menu, click Home, then open Library → Preferences → Microsoft.
      9. Locate com.microsoft.word.prefs.plist and move it to the desktop.
      10. Start Word and test again.
      • If the problem persists, restore the file.
      • If resolved, delete it from the desktop.
    3. Install the latest Word for Mac update
      1. Open Word.
      2. On the Help menu, click Check for Updates.
      3. Install any available updates for Word for Mac.
      4. Restart Word and test search behavior.
    4. Test with a new macOS user profile If the issue continues, it may be tied to the current macOS user profile.
      1. Open System Settings → Users & Groups.
      2. Create a new user account.
      3. Sign in to the new account, open Word, and test search.
      • If the problem does not occur, the issue is with the original profile’s Office data. In that case, consider migrating to the new profile or fully uninstalling and reinstalling Office for Mac.

If none of these steps change the behavior, a full uninstall/reinstall of Office for Mac is the next step, ensuring all Office-related data for the affected profile is removed before reinstalling.

    Hi, Gregg Hurwitz

This sounds less like the document itself and more like Word’s search interface getting “stuck” on cached Find results, especially if it happens across more than one file. Word for Mac has had a few Navigation Pane and Find box quirks, so I’d try isolating the search pane first before doing another full reset.

Besides the solutions provided by the Q&A Assist, here are some suggestions you can try:

Open Word, go to View, and turn Navigation Pane off. Close Word completely, reopen it, then turn Navigation Pane back on. This can refresh the search panel without touching preferences.

Try using Edit > Find > Advanced Find and Replace instead of the ribbon search box or Command + F. It is recommended that using the older Find/Replace dialog can avoid some of the newer floating “Find in Document” search box glitches.

Clear the current search manually. Open the search box, delete the old term, press Esc, then close the Navigation Pane before saving and closing the document. Reopen the document and test with a new search term.

Check whether Word is enrolled in Microsoft 365 Insider. Go to Help > Check for Updates > Advanced. If it is on Beta or Current Channel Preview, switch back to the regular Current Channel, then update Word. Search-related UI problems can appear first in preview builds.

Start Word while holding the Shift key. This opens Word without reopening previous windows. If the problem stops, Word may simply have been restoring an old document window/session with old search state.

If it only happens in one document, copy the whole document except the final paragraph mark into a new blank document, then save it under a new name. That often removes hidden document-level corruption without reinstalling Office.

If none of these change the behavior, I’d use Help > Feedback in Word and report it as a Find/Search UI issue, especially if it started after a recent update.

Thank you for your patience in reading, I hope this information has been helpful to you.

Thank you for this. I tried all of this, including a full uninstall/reinstall. The problem is briefly solved and then it creeps back in, especially across search item in different docs. It is terrible for work flow. I've been trying to fix it and find solutions for nearly a year now. It makes Word almost unusable.
