Azure for Students - Unable to verify because my college does not provide student email addresses

I am a full-time student from JAT Arts, Science and Commerce College for Women, Malegaon, Maharashtra, India.

I am trying to register for Azure for Students. During academic verification, I am asked to provide a school-issued email address. However, my college does not provide email accounts to students.

I can provide proof of enrollment such as:

  • Student ID card
  • Fee receipt
  • Enrollment proof

Is there an alternative method to verify my academic status and access Azure for Students without a school-provided email address?

Thank you.

Hi @Tahoora

Thank you for the clear details, and sorry you're running into this.

For Azure for Students, Microsoft documentation states that academic status must be verified through your institution/organization email address. Because of that requirement, there is no documented alternate flow that uses student documents (ID card, fee receipt, enrollment proof) instead of school email for Azure for Students verification.

You may consider the GitHub Student Developer Pack which has a whole basket of free subscriptions and does include a link to Azure for Students. You may end up with the same issue when it comes to the Azure for Students using this method as well; something to consider, however.

What you can try next:

  • Contact your college administration/IT office and ask whether they can provide or enable an official student email domain for verification.
  • If your institution participates in Microsoft education programs, ask them whether they support identity federation methods (for example, Shibboleth is mentioned for Azure for Students Starter scenarios).
  • For account/access help, use Microsoft student support: https://aka.ms/studentsupport

Official Microsoft Docs.

I hope this was helpful, and if you found it to be so, please mark this as an "Accepted" answer, and Upvote as this will help others with similar issues.

Best regards,

Hi @Tahoora Thank you for contacting Microsoft Q&A. We understand that while registering for Azure for Students, you're being asked to verify your academic status using a school-issued email address. Since your college does not provide student email accounts, you are looking for an alternative way to verify your eligibility using documents such as your Student ID card, fee receipt, or enrollment proof.

According to Microsoft's eligibility requirements, Azure for Students is available to students who:

    • Attend an accredited, degree-granting educational institution as a full-time student.
    • Verify their academic status through their institution's email address.

Unfortunately, Microsoft does not currently provide a direct self-service option within Azure for Students to upload a student ID card, fee receipt, or enrollment proof as an alternative verification method. Academic verification is tied to an eligible institutional identity (school email or Shibboleth, where supported).

Recommended Alternative: GitHub Student Developer Pack

The GitHub Student Developer Pack route for students whose institutions do not issue email addresses. GitHub Education allows student verification using alternative documents such as:

    • Student ID card
    • Enrollment letter
    • Admission proof
    • Other academic documentation

After your GitHub Student status is approved, you can attempt to redeem the Azure for Students benefit through the GitHub verification flow.

    Steps:

    1. Apply for the GitHub Student Developer Pack:
    2. Complete GitHub's student verification process using your academic documents.
    3. Once approved, visit:
    4. Sign in using the same account associated with your verified GitHub Student profile and complete the Azure activation process.

Azure for Students eligibility requires verification through an organization-issued email address from an accredited, degree‑granting institution. The documented requirements state that academic status must be verified using the organization’s email address and that the offer is limited to one Azure for Students subscription per eligible customer.

Because the verification process is explicitly tied to an institutional email, there is no documented alternative path (such as uploading a student ID, fee receipt, or enrollment proof) to obtain Azure for Students when the school does not provide student email accounts.

If the institution cannot issue an organization email address, Azure for Students Starter is the available alternative. Azure for Students Starter:

    • Is free and does not require a credit card
    • Is available to verified students who can use either an organization email or Shibboleth if the organization supports it
    • Provides free tiers of key services such as Azure App Service, Azure Functions, Azure Notification Hubs, Azure Database for MySQL, Application Insights, and Azure DevOps Services

If the college cannot support either organization email or Shibboleth, access to Azure for Students and Azure for Students Starter cannot be completed under the documented eligibility rules. In that case, the institution’s administration or IT department would need to work with Microsoft to enable appropriate academic identity (for example, issuing organization email accounts or configuring Shibboleth) before students can be verified.
