Unable to confirm University ID for Azure for Students

Hello Microsoft Team,

I am a student at SVKM's NMIMS, India, and I am trying to activate Azure for Students in order to complete my Microsoft Student Ambassadors registration.

I successfully completed the Academic Verification process using my university email address (@nmims.in), and the verification page showed "Verification complete."

However, when I proceed with Azure for Students activation, I consistently receive the following error:

"Unable to confirm your University ID"

Steps I have already tried:

  1. Signed in using my university email account.
  2. Completed Academic Verification successfully.
  3. Retried the process multiple times.
  4. Used a private/incognito browser session.
  5. Ensured I am signed into the correct Microsoft account.

Could you please check whether my university domain is eligible for Azure for Students and advise how I can complete the activation process?

This issue is preventing me from completing Microsoft Student Ambassadors registration, which requires an Azure for Students account.

Thank you.

Azure for Students eligibility and activation are controlled by the offer’s global rules, not only by the academic verification step. Academic verification can succeed, but the Azure for Students offer can still fail with “Unable to confirm your University ID” if the offer’s eligibility checks are not fully satisfied.

From the documented rules for Azure for Students:

    • The offer is available only to students who:
      1. Affirm being age 18 or older and attending an accredited, degree‑granting, two‑year or four‑year educational institution as a full‑time student.
      2. Verify academic status through the institution’s email address.
    • The offer is limited to one Azure for Students subscription per eligible customer and is nontransferable.
    • It cannot be combined with other offers unless Microsoft explicitly allows it.

The documentation does not expose a way to check or override domain eligibility from the client side, and it does not provide a self‑service fix for the specific “Unable to confirm your University ID” error once academic verification has already completed.

Given what is documented, the only supported self‑service actions are:

    1. Confirm that all eligibility conditions are met (full‑time student at an accredited degree‑granting institution, 18+, using the organization email for verification).
    2. Ensure that there is not already an Azure for Students subscription associated with the same identity, because only one such subscription is allowed per eligible customer.

If those conditions are satisfied and the error persists, resolution requires direct support intervention, because domain eligibility and offer enforcement are handled on Microsoft’s side and are not configurable by the user.

For the Microsoft Student Ambassadors registration dependency, the documentation does not provide an alternative path when Azure for Students activation fails despite successful academic verification, so this also needs to be raised with Microsoft support.

Hi @PASUPULA SAI TEJA Sorry you’re running into that “Unable to confirm your University ID” error even after successful academic verification—this usually means the second step of the Azure for Students activation flow can’t match your verified student identity to the university/program eligibility checks.

Based on the docs provided, here are the most relevant things to try and the best fallback options:

    1. Confirm you’re using the supported student verification method

Azure for Students requires you to verify your academic status through your organization’s email address (or Shibboleth if your organization supports it). If you already got “Verification complete,” that part is good—but the activation step may still fail if the enrollment identity doesn’t line up with the university eligibility system used for activation.

Try signing/activating again using the same Microsoft account that completed “Academic Verification,” and ensure the flow is using your university email.

    1. If your university isn’t eligible for the Azure for Students activation flow, use the GitHub alternative

The documentation notes an alternative path if your school doesn’t have a contract with Microsoft for Azure for Students signup:

    • Use GitHub Student Developer Pack approach for Azure benefits:
      1. Go to: https://signup.azure.com/studentverification?offerType=1
      2. Choose Sign in with GitHub
      3. Sign in using your GitHub user ID (not your email address)
      4. Ensure the same Azure email address is set as Primary under your GitHub account “Emails”
      5. Complete the verification steps and then redeem the Azure benefit code from GitHub Education

This is specifically called out as the path when the university eligibility/contract is the blocker.

    1. Use Azure for Students Starter (if appropriate) or Azure free options as a temporary workaround

If the Azure for Students activation cannot be completed, you can consider alternatives mentioned in the docs:

    1. Contact Azure for Education support

If none of the above resolves the “University ID” confirmation issue, the docs recommend reaching out to Azure for Education support:

    https://azureforeducation.microsoft.com/institutions/contact

They can check why the system can’t confirm the University ID and help you complete activation (or switch you to the correct path).Hey!
