It's 2026, and Microsoft has forgotten how to write code to easily and automatically install Office Home and Business 2024. Words do not escape me, but words fit to print do.

Unfortunately, Office Setup has a peculiar habit of "preferring" subscription versions, although you ask for a different version to be installed.

Start Word and check which product name is indicated at File > Account. Remove any accounts that you do not need.

Also, click your avatar on the status bar in Word and remove any accounts that could store the incorrect license.

    Follow these steps in order:

    1. Install the latest Office 2024 updates
      • Make sure Office 2024 is fully up to date. Follow the steps in Install Office updates to get the latest build. This resolves known issues where Office 2024 may appear or behave like an earlier or different Office version.
    2. Clear the local Office license cache
      • Close all Office apps.
      • In File Explorer, go to:
        • %LocalAppData%\Microsoft\Office\Licenses
      • Delete the folder named 5 in that directory.
    3. Reopen Office and select the correct license
      • Start Word or another Office app.
      • When prompted, sign in with the Microsoft account that owns the Office 2024 license.
      • If a list of Office products appears, explicitly select Office 2024.
      • In the app, open the Account or Product Information page and confirm that Office 2024 is shown.

If Office still insists on Microsoft 365 instead of using the Office 2024 license after these steps, contact Microsoft Support via https://support.microsoft.com/home/contact.
