I have an old laptop with Windows on it that I can no longer access because it is no longer on my account. How do I get Windows back on it so it can be used again?

Happy to help — but before pointing you down a particular path, a couple of quick questions so I don't send you off reinstalling for no reason:

When you say it's "no longer on my account," do you mean you can't sign in to the existing Windows install (account/password issue), or that the laptop boots fine but you just want it set up fresh?
Roughly how old is the laptop, and do you know which Windows it was running (Windows 7, 8.1, 10, 11)?
Any error message on screen when you try to use it?

The reason I'm asking — depending on the answer, this is either a sign-in/account recovery problem (no reinstall needed), or a clean reinstall situation, and the steps are quite different. If you can share those details, I can walk you through the right route from there.

My old laptop is a 2020 Dell Inspiron 7306 2n1. When I charged it up and turned it on it booted up just fine and showed me a typical Windows sign in with a scenic picture and a place to type in a password. I think it was/is running Windows 10 or 11. I used the password I had written down when I gave it to my friend. It told me the password was incorrect and I selected reset password. But apparently I don't recall the answers to my security questions. I think it is an account/password issue, and I'm not interested in setting it up fresh. There might have been a limit to the number of devices my husband could have on his Norton license and so I removed it from my account.

I hope that this answers your questions and that there will be an easy way to reset the password and put the machine back into use.

The fact that the reset flow asked you security questions (rather than sending a code to your email or phone) means this is almost certainly a local Windows account, not a Microsoft account. That matters because the recovery paths are different, and unfortunately the local one is the more limited of the two.

I have to be straight: when both the password and the security answers are forgotten on a local account, Microsoft doesn't really have a supported way to recover the password without wiping. It's by design — if there were an easy way around it, it wouldn't be much of a password. So the documented route is Reset this PC, which sounds drastic but is less bad than it sounds:

It's built into Windows, no download or install media needed.

You can choose "Keep my files", which preserves your personal files (Documents, Pictures, etc.) — only installed apps and settings get cleared.

You'd then set up a new sign-in afterward and the laptop's usable again.

Before you go that route though, one thing worth a quick try — on the lock screen, click Sign-in options under the password box and see if there's a different sign-in method listed, or click I forgot my password again to check whether it offers an email/phone code option this time instead of security questions. If it does, it's actually a Microsoft account and you can recover it at account.live.com/password/reset. If it still only offers security questions, then it's definitely local and Reset this PC is your path.

To use the old laptop again, Windows must be reinstalled and then activated.

Back up any files if possible
If the laptop still boots at all, copy personal files to an external drive or to a cloud service such as OneDrive before reinstalling, because some reinstall options can remove files.
Create Windows installation media on another working PC
On a working Windows PC, use the Media Creation Tool to create the installation media for Windows (USB or DVD). This will let the old laptop install or reinstall Windows.
Boot the old laptop from the installation media
Connect the USB/DVD to the old laptop and start it from that media. If it does not boot from USB/DVD automatically, change the boot order in the laptop’s firmware/boot menu (check the laptop manufacturer’s instructions).
Choose how to reinstall

For a completely fresh start (removes files, apps, and settings), follow the Clean install steps from the installation media. During setup, select the edition of Windows that matches the license the device had before (for example, Home vs Pro). A clean install will erase personal files and apps on the laptop.
If the laptop can still start Windows normally, an in‑place reinstall from within Windows can keep personal files and apps, but this requires being able to sign in first.

Activate Windows after reinstall
After installation, connect the laptop to the internet. Windows usually activates automatically if:

The device has a digital license stored with Microsoft’s activation servers, or
The product key is embedded in the device firmware.

If activation does not happen automatically, use Settings → Update & Security → Activation (or the equivalent in Windows 11) and run the Activation troubleshooter. If there was a significant hardware change or the license is not recognized, support may be needed to reactivate.

If Windows cannot be activated and the laptop is very old, consider the options for staying on a supported Windows version, such as installing Windows 10 or 11 if the hardware meets the minimum system requirements for Windows 10 or Windows 11.
