Outlook messages not visible

My reading pane (message list) is not appearing in Outlook. What you see below is what is displayed. Trying to reset and display messages right of the navigation pane without success.

I understand you’re having a problem where the message list/reading area does not show in the new Outlook for Windows (folders and unread counts appear on the left, but the message list area stays blank as in your screenshot). I’m happy to help. Could you confirm:

Are messages visible in Outlook on the web for the same account and the same folder (Inbox)?
Does the blank message list happen in all folders (Inbox/Sent/Deleted), or only one folder?

Meanwhile, please also:

1) Confirm the mailbox content is still there

Sign in to Outlook on the web using a browser and open the same Inbox folder to confirm messages are visible there.
If mail is visible on the web, the mailbox is fine and the issue maybe isolated to the new Outlook app on the PC.

2) Uninstall and reinstall the new Outlook app

End the new Outlook process
- Right‑click Start > Task Manager > select Microsoft Outlook > End task.
Uninstall new Outlook
- You can uninstall from Start (All apps > right‑click the app > Uninstall) or from Settings > Apps > Installed apps > Uninstall.
Reinstall new Outlook
- Install again using the Microsoft-supported “get new Outlook” flow.
- Microsoft guidance: Start using new Outlook for Windows - Microsoft Support
- After reinstalling, open new Outlook and add your account if it isn’t added automatically.

3)If the blank area happens only in new Outlook (not on the web)

If reinstalling doesn’t restore the message list, use New Outlook for Windows troubleshooting - Outlook | Microsoft Learn

The reinstall did in fact solve the problem. It took a bit for all message history to load but evereything appears to be back to normal. Thank you.

"After reinstalling, open new Outlook and add your account if it isn’t added automatically." What if you have six different email accounts ..... Do you have to add all six accounts manually ? The madness and BADNESS of the New Outlook!

I would suggest that you start a new thread using the "Ask a question" button at the top of this page to create a new Question and include the details for your specific problem.

This provides much higher visibility to your issue than adding on to an existing post, which is only seen by people who are already following this question.

@Hornblower409 No further answer needed, a complete restart solved the problem ... just the original answer suggested a reinstall but with six different accounts, I do work for several organisations and like to keep the message threads separate, it would be difficult and time-consuming to recreate them.

I never had a problem with the Old Outlook. Reverting is not an option ... you lose all your email addresses and groups.

Sounds like you have a pretty complex setup, so I'm not going to give you just the usual "Export from New Outlook, Import into Classic" answer.

But you might want to start a new Question on just that problem. Something like "How to revert to Classic Outlook from New Outlook without losing any data" and include the specifics for your environment. Someone else may have some suggestions.

Answer 1

In new Outlook for Windows the message list and Reading Pane layout is controlled from the Layout settings. To restore the message list and show messages to the right of the folder (navigation) pane:

At the top-right of Outlook, select Settings (gear icon).
Select Mail > Layout.
Under Reading pane, choose Right (or Bottom if preferred). This turns the Reading Pane back on and positions it next to the folder list.
Under Message organization, verify:
- How do you want your Message List organized? is set to a normal grouping option (for example, not something that hides all items).
- What do you want to see in your Reading Pane? is set to show messages as desired.
Under Message list format, choose either Sender name first or Subject first so the message list appears in a standard format.

After applying these settings, the message list and Reading Pane should reappear to the right of the navigation pane.
