Manual removal of a payment method is only possible while the Azure billing account/tenant is still active and the required conditions are met. Once the tenant is inactive and passes Microsoft’s inactivity/deletion window, the tenant and its billing context are removed and the associated payment method cannot be managed from that tenant anymore.
For active or still-accessible tenants, the supported options are:
- Delete or detach the payment method from the Azure billing profile (Microsoft Customer Agreement / MOSP)
- Sign in to the Azure portal and go to Cost Management + Billing.
- Select the appropriate billing scope and then Billing profiles.
- Under Billing, select Payment methods.
- Use the ellipsis (…) next to the card and select Delete.
- If Delete is unavailable, Azure shows unmet conditions such as:
- Outstanding charges
- Recurring charges (support plans, subscriptions, reservations, savings plans)
- Pending charges
- Active subscriptions
- Follow the links provided in the pane to resolve each condition (for example, cancel recurring charges under Products + services → Recurring charges, pay past-due or pending invoices under Billing → Invoices), then return and delete/detach the payment method.
- Remove the card from the account if it is not the default for any billing profile
- In Cost Management + Billing → Payment methods, open the ellipsis (…) for the card and select Delete.
- If the card is the default payment method for any billing profile, first change the default payment method for those profiles, then delete the card.
- Microsoft 365 business accounts
- In the Microsoft 365 admin center, go to Bills & payments → Payment methods.
- If the payment method is not attached to any subscription or billing profile, select More actions (…) → Delete and complete the wizard.
- If it is attached, use the Delete payment method wizard to move subscriptions to another payment method (or add a new one) and then delete it.
- Entra Free subscription limitation
- If the billing account contains an Entra Free subscription, the last payment method on file cannot be deleted or detached.
- To remove the last payment method in that case, the tenant itself must be deleted (see “Delete the organization” in the referenced documentation). Once the tenant is deleted, the payment method can no longer be managed from that tenant.
If the tenant is already blocked due to inactivity and then permanently deleted (after the inactivity window), the tenant and its billing profile are no longer recoverable, and the payment method cannot be removed from that tenant context. In that situation, card security and further misuse prevention must be handled with the card issuer (for example, replacing the card or blocking charges), as there is no longer an Azure-side object to modify.
