MS Teams accessing my microphone while not running

My microphone icon (bottom right corner) is "on". When I hover over it it says "Unmuted: Microsoft Teams" meaning that MS teams is actively using my mic. But the thing is, the only program that is running on my computer right now is Chrome. I don't want to disable mic access to teams becuase I have virtual teams meetings all the time. But I am also not a fan of a hot mic, if you know what I mean...any suggestions or folks with similar issues?

Hi Tracy, Morgan,

On Windows, the microphone icon indicates that an application currently has access to your microphone. If it shows “Unmuted: Microsoft Teams,” this means Teams still has an active audio session (running in the background) or hasn’t properly released the microphone. This doesn’t necessarily mean Teams is recording, but it does indicate that the mic is still open.

You can stop this behavior using the following workarounds:

  1. End the active Teams session

Even if Chrome appears to be the only open app, Teams can continue running in the background and keep using your microphone.

  • Open Task Manager (Ctrl + Shift + Esc)
  • Locate the Microsoft Teams process
  • Select it and click End task

This will not disable your microphone; it only stops the current Teams session. When you relaunch Teams, it won’t access your mic until you join a call.

  1. Force Teams to release the microphone

In some cases, Teams does not properly release the mic after a meeting ends.

You can force it to reset the audio session by starting and ending a test call:

  • Go to Settings > Devices in Teams
  • Select Make a test call, then hang up

  • This often prompts Teams to properly release the microphone.

I hope these workaround helps you resolve the issue. I’m glad to assist and truly hope the information provided has been useful. Please feel free to reach out anytime if you need further assistance.

The microphone icon showing “Unmuted: Microsoft Teams” means Windows is reporting that the Teams process (desktop app or web in a browser tab) still has an open handle to the microphone, even if it is not visibly in a call window.

To keep Teams usable for meetings but avoid a “hot mic,” use these checks and controls:

    1. Verify Teams is actually closed
      • In the Teams desktop app, select Settings and more > Settings, then sign out or exit.
      • Open Task Manager and confirm there is no running Teams process. If there is, end the task so it releases the microphone.
    2. Check Teams for web (Chrome/Edge)
      • In Chrome or Edge, if any tab is signed into Teams (including pinned or background tabs), it can keep the mic permission.
      • Close all Teams tabs.
      • In Chrome, go to Settings > Privacy and security > Site settings > Permissions > Microphone and confirm:
        • The correct device is selected.
        • Under Default behavior, Sites can ask to use your microphone is set so Teams must prompt before using it.
      • In Edge, go to Settings and more > Settings > Cookies and site permissions > Microphone and ensure Ask before accessing (recommended) is on.
    3. Restrict background access per app (Windows)
      • Open Settings > Privacy & security > Microphone.
      • Ensure Microphone access and Let apps access your microphone are on so Teams can work.
      • Confirm Microsoft Teams (work or school) is enabled so it can use the mic only when needed.
      • If the toggles were already on, turn them off and back on to reapply settings.
    4. Confirm which app is using the mic
      • From Start > Settings > System > Sound.
      • Under Input, select the active microphone and check that it is the correct device.
      • If the mic is enabled and unmuted, Windows may still show Teams as the last app that accessed it, even if it is no longer actively recording. Closing Teams and any Teams web tabs should change this when another app uses the mic.
    5. Use per‑site browser permissions for Teams
      • For Microsoft 365 web apps (including Teams on the web), ensure the browser is set to Ask for microphone access so it cannot silently start using the mic:
        • In Chrome, make sure the Teams/Office domain is under Allow only when explicitly granted, and otherwise the default is to ask.
        • In Edge, use the lock icon in the address bar to verify the site’s microphone permission is not set to Always allow.

This configuration keeps Teams ready for meetings but forces it (and the browser) to prompt before accessing the microphone, preventing unintended “hot mic” situations.
