How to allow a safe .exe file to be downloaded

For years I have used Cook’n software from DVO enterprises. I got a new laptop with Win 11 Pro, and it will not let me download the application - Cook’n.exe. I get a message that the file is not usually downloaded and the download is cancelled. I know the file is safe, is there a way to allow it to be downloaded?

Thanks

Microsoft Edge and Windows 11 are blocking the .exe because it’s considered a potentially dangerous download type. Since the file is known and trusted, there are a few ways to allow it.

  1. Use Edge’s “Keep” option for blocked downloads
For potentially dangerous file types without the required “user gesture,” Edge will say the download “was blocked” and offer options:
    • Start the download as usual.
    • When Edge reports that the download was blocked, open the downloads list (for example via edge://downloads or the downloads flyout).
    • Select the … (ellipsis) next to the blocked Cook’n.exe download.
    • Choose Keep to allow the download to continue.
This is the standard way Edge lets a user override the block for a file that is believed to be safe.
  2. Ensure there is a clear user gesture and site history
Edge is stricter with some file types and requires:
    • A direct user action (clicking the download link, or using Save link as), and
    • A prior visit to the same site (before today).
To help Edge treat the download as intentional:
    • Visit the Cook’n site normally, browse a page or two, then close the browser and reopen it later.
    • Return to the site and click the Cook’n.exe download link directly.
    • If still blocked, again use the … menu on the blocked download and choose Keep.
  3. Check antivirus or security software
Third‑party antivirus can also cancel or block downloads, especially .exe files. If the message appears to come from security software rather than Edge:
    • Open the antivirus app and check its quarantine or web protection logs for the Cook’n.exe download.
    • If it is flagged but known to be safe, follow the product’s steps to allow or restore the file.
    • If necessary, temporarily disable only the web/download scanning feature, download Cook’n.exe, then immediately re‑enable protection.
  4. If Windows Attachment Manager blocks the file after download
If the file downloads but won’t open because Windows marks it as unsafe:
    • Right‑click the downloaded Cook’n.exe file and select Properties.
    • On the General tab, if there is an Unblock checkbox or button, select Unblock, then click OK.
    • Run the installer again.

These steps allow a known‑safe .exe to be downloaded and run while keeping Edge and Windows protections in place for unknown or risky files.
