The name shown as controlling the computer is typically the Windows user account, Microsoft account, or organization (work/school) that owns or manages the device. If that name is not recognized, there are two common causes:
- The device is signed in with someone else’s account (another local user or Microsoft account).
- The device is joined to or managed by an organization (for example, a work or school tenant) that has control over settings and policies.
To address this, use these approaches:
- Check which account is signed in
- Open Settings → Accounts.
- Under Your info, check the name and account type shown.
- If this is not the correct account, sign out and sign in with the correct one, or create/switch to a local account using the guidance under Manage user accounts in Windows and related articles.
- Review local vs Microsoft vs work/school account
- If the account name is a personal Microsoft account and just needs to be changed (for example, it shows an old name), follow the steps in How to change your Microsoft account name or address.
- If the device is using a local account and the local user name is wrong, use the Manage user accounts in Windows and Create a local user or administrator account in Windows guidance to adjust or create the correct account, then move to that account.
- If the device is managed by an organization
- If the message indicates that the device is controlled or managed by an organization, that organization’s admin controls policies and some settings.
- In that case, contact the organization’s IT admin and provide the device information shown (such as Device Object ID or similar) so they can confirm ownership or remove the device from their management if appropriate.
If sign-in issues occur (for example, cannot sign in to the correct account), use the Sign-in helper tool or Contact Microsoft Support for account-specific assistance, noting that support cannot change account details or send password reset links directly.
