The standard 'help' is probably not going to work because the likely problem is someone on the Microsoft side has made a change to the service or the service has a security token that has expired. The last time this happened, the service was 'down' (showing the error reported) for an entire week. Or maybe this feature was 'outsourced' to AI and it will take longer for it to begin working again. Irritating.

Thanks. All of your suggestions were done before I submitted the query and without success. It remains the case now even I re-attempted all the ratification method. Mine is on auto refresh and not manual refresh.

    Hi, CL

That message usually means the Stocks data service in Excel is having a temporary problem on Microsoft’s side, so it may not be your file or PC. Here are some suggestions you can try:

First, wait a bit and try Data > Refresh All again. If it still fails, close Excel fully and reopen the workbook. It is also recommended that you check File > Account and make sure Excel is signed in with the Microsoft 365 account tied to your subscription, then run Update Now in case the app is behind.

If it still will not refresh, try opening the same file in Excel for the web. Sometimes linked data types behave better there. If the pop-up keeps interrupting your work, you can temporarily change that stock data type to Manual refresh so Excel stops nagging, though the values may stay old until the service is back.

Thank you for your patience in reading, I hope this information has been helpful to you.

I faced the similar issue yesterday and I believe the issue is usually related to calculation settings or connection refresh

First, check Excel’s calculation mode. If it is set to Manual, formulas and linked data will not update automatically. You can verify this by going to Formulas → Calculation Options and making sure it is set to Automatic.

If your file uses external data (such as Power Query, web data, or linked workbooks), you may need to refresh it manually. Go to Data → Refresh All and confirm that the query or connection completes without errors. If the data source requires sign‑in, make sure you are still logged in and your credentials haven’t expired.

    This worked for me!
