In Microsoft Teams, a user can appear as Unknown User when the account has been deleted, or when it was disabled and then re-enabled.
For a newly created email and Teams account, the most likely cause is that the account was disabled and then re-enabled shortly after creation. In this case:
- The Unknown User display is temporary by design.
- The display name usually corrects itself automatically within about two weeks.
- To speed this up, sign out of Teams on all devices and sign in again. After that, the display name typically updates within 72 hours.
If the account was actually deleted and recreated, any historical messages sent from the deleted identity will permanently show as Unknown User.
