A Microsoft app for iOS and Android devices that enables authentication with two-factor verification, phone sign-in, and code generation
Those prompts usually mean someone is repeatedly trying to sign into an account that’s linked to your Microsoft Authenticator. The app is just asking you to approve the login attempt by matching a number, so if you’re getting them without trying to sign in yourself, it’s almost certainly not random.
The important part is this: do not approve any of those requests. If you approve even one by mistake, you could give someone access to your account.
This typically happens when your password for one of those accounts has been exposed or guessed, and the attacker is stuck at the second factor. They keep triggering login attempts hoping you’ll get annoyed and approve one. Even if you only see two accounts in the app, it could be one of those being targeted, or a work/school account that was previously added and is still linked.
You should go directly to each account you have tied to Authenticator and change the password to something strong and unique. After that, review recent sign-in activity for anything suspicious and sign out of all sessions if the option exists. Also check the security settings to confirm that only your devices are registered for multi-factor authentication and remove anything unfamiliar.
If the prompts keep coming even after changing your password, it can help to remove and re-add the authenticator method, or switch to a different sign-in method temporarily. For Microsoft accounts specifically, you can also enable number matching and additional protections in the security settings, which reduce the risk of accidental approval.
If you’re unsure which account is being targeted, open the Authenticator app and tap each account to see if it shows recent activity or matching prompts. The one generating the requests is the one under attack.
