Globally unique resources that provide access to data management services and serve as the parent namespace for the services.
Hi Dinesh Kumar,
Thanks for reaching out in Microsoft Q&A forum,
You can definitely cancel your subscription even though you have immutable blobs with a locked 5-year retention policy. Here’s how it works:
- Can you cancel with data still under a locked retention policy?
- Yes. As long as you’re a Subscription Owner or Service Administrator, you can go into the Azure portal’s Subscriptions blade and hit Cancel subscription.
- Cancellation simply disables all services (VMs de-allocated, storage set to read-only) but doesn’t try to delete your blobs — they remain intact under their existing immutability policy.
- What happens to the subscription and the data after cancellation?
- Billing stops immediately on cancel, though it may take up to 10 minutes to show in the portal.
- Microsoft holds onto your data for 30–90 days “just in case” you change your mind. At the end of that period the subscription itself is automatically deleted.
- However, your blobs have their own retention lock for 5 years. Even after the subscription object is gone, those blobs cannot be purged until that 5-year retention lapses. In other words, auto-deletion of the subscription won’t override your immutability policy — the data stays in read-only mode until the policy expires.
- Will you keep getting billed for retained data?
- No. Once you cancel, you are not charged for keeping data around during that 30–90 day window, nor for the period the blobs remain under immutability lock.
In short: go ahead and cancel now, you won’t be blocked by the 5-year lock. The subscription will auto-delete after 90 days, but your immutable data will stick around read-only until its retention period finishes and you won’t pay to store it during that time.
