Sending, receiving, and organizing email in Outlook.com
Repeated prompts to change or enter a password usually indicate a sign-in or authentication problem with the Microsoft account.
Use these steps:
- Run the Microsoft sign-in helper
- Go to the Sign-in Helper and enter the email address or phone number used for Outlook.com.
- The tool checks for common account issues and provides specific steps to fix them.
- Link: Sign-in Helper.
- If you see Error 400 or similar when signing in
- Error 400 can appear after too many sign-in attempts or if there’s an issue with the browser/app or network.
- Try these in order:
- At the sign-in page, choose Other ways to sign in and use another method (PIN, security key, Authenticator approval, or code to email/phone) if already configured.
- Update or reinstall the app/browser being used to sign in.
- Try signing in from a different device (another PC, phone, or tablet).
- Switch networks (for example, from Wi‑Fi to mobile data or a different Wi‑Fi).
- If two-step verification (MFA) is enabled on a work/school account
- Repeated attempts can trigger Microsoft Entra multifactor authentication protections and temporarily block sign-in.
- Wait before trying again or use a different MFA method if available.
- If suspicious activity is suspected or the block persists, contact the organization’s IT administrator and ask them to check Microsoft Entra sign-in logs.
- If Outlook mobile is involved
- Make sure the latest Outlook app version is installed from the app store.
- If using a Microsoft personal account and sign-in still fails, use the sign-in helper tool above.
- For work/school accounts, if self-service password reset is allowed, use the Work or school password reset page; otherwise contact the IT admin.
If the problem continues even after these steps, avoid repeated sign-in attempts for a period (for example, 24 hours) to prevent further temporary blocks, then try again using an alternate sign-in method or device.
