I tried entering automatic repair mode, but it didn't work as well as UEFI with a USB, which I really finished installing Microsoft creation installation, and even checked the folders. I recently downloaded the new BIOS for it on Microsoft's website since it suddenly crashed, maybe because I didn't update it instantly. It went okay for a few days, then I lost my brightness slider, so I uninstalled and installed Intel Iris (r) xe graphics since it has a warning icon, and it went okay. Now, it's been like a few days after that, and I forgot to update again. Now, I'm struggling to open UEFI even if I spam it with the volume down key, although it did suddenly open last night after letting it freeze for like 20 mins, it only had pc information, date and time, secured code, and exit. I clicked exit since none of those leads to nowhere, now it's still freezing. Please help.

    Hi mary,

I understand how disruptive it must be when your Surface Go 2 gets stuck on the Windows logo and you're unable to access recovery options, especially after it had been working normally just a few days before.

As a next step, please try the troubleshooting guidance shared earlier by Q&A Assist. Those steps are designed to help force a restart and attempt recovery using a USB recovery drive, which may allow the device to boot into the Windows Recovery Environment and repair or reset the system.

If the issue continues after completing those steps, for example if the device still cannot boot into Windows or from the USB recovery drive, this may indicate that the Surface requires further hardware-level diagnostics.

In that case, you can submit a repair request if still under warranty or bring your surface to a nearby Microsoft Authorized Service Provider for in-person evaluation and assistance.

Please keep me updated on how it goes.

Follow these steps in order on the Surface Go 2:

    1. Force a shutdown and restart
      1. Press and hold the Power button for about 20 seconds.
      2. Keep holding until the device turns off and then restarts and the Windows logo appears again.
      3. Release the Power button when the Windows logo appears.
      4. If Windows still freezes on the logo after this, continue with the next step.
    2. Boot from a USB recovery drive and reset Since normal boot and Automatic Repair are not working, use a USB recovery drive to start and repair/reset Windows.
      1. Make sure the Surface is completely shut down.
      2. Insert a prepared USB recovery drive into the Surface Go 2 (USB-C port; use a USB-A to USB-C adapter if needed).
      3. Press and hold the Volume-down button.
      4. While holding Volume-down, press and release the Power button.
      5. When the Microsoft/Surface logo appears, release the Volume-down button.
      6. The device should boot from the USB recovery drive.
      7. Follow the on‑screen instructions to repair or reset Windows using the recovery environment.
If a standard USB recovery drive is not yet created, it must be created on another working Windows PC using the Surface recovery image and the “Create a recovery drive” tool, then used with the steps above.
    3. If the device shows “No bootable device” or will not boot from USB
      1. Confirm the USB is connected to the USB‑C port and is properly prepared.
      2. Try the boot sequence again: hold Volume-down, then press and release Power, keep holding Volume-down until the logo appears.
      3. If it still does not boot from USB, check UEFI settings (when UEFI does open) to ensure “Enable Boot from USB devices” is enabled.
    4. If Automatic Repair appears again
      1. On the Automatic Repair screen, select Advanced options.
      2. Select Troubleshoot > Advanced options > Startup Repair and follow the instructions.
      3. If Windows starts afterward, install the latest Surface and Windows updates to help prevent future problems.
    5. If Windows still will not start
      1. From Advanced options, use System Restore (if restore points exist) to roll back to a time when the device worked.
      2. If that is not available or does not help, perform a reset from the recovery environment using the USB recovery drive (this reinstalls Windows; depending on the option chosen, apps and settings may be removed).

If none of these steps work (cannot boot from USB, UEFI remains limited, and Windows never loads), the device likely needs professional service.
