Hello,

I am experiencing a critical issue with my Microsoft 365 Developer Program (E5 Sandbox) tenant. As of yesterday, my OneDrive has been switched to Read-Only mode across all platforms, effectively halting my development work.

Tenant Status:

Subscription: Active (E5 Developer Sandbox)

Time Remaining: 64 days (confirmed on the Developer Dashboard).

Renewal: This account renews every 90 days based on activity.

Troubleshooting Performed:

Web Version: Verified via browser; the web interface is also Read-Only. I cannot upload, edit, or delete files online.

Local Clients: The issue persists on both Windows 11 and Mobile (Android/iOS).

Account Status: Logged into the Admin Center; no billing or subscription expiration alerts are visible.

Policy Check: There are no "Acceptable Use Policy" (AUP) banners or violation notices visible in my admin dashboard.

The Problem:

Despite having 64 days remaining and a healthy subscription status, my OneDrive site seems to have been restricted at the server level. I am unable to perform any "Write" actions.

Request:

Could a Microsoft representative or moderator please check if there is a backend "LockState" or provisioning error on my tenant?

Thank you for your help.

Hi @Nadeem M. Anjum

Based on the detailed information you provided, I understand that your E5 Developer Sandbox OneDrive has unexpectedly switched to Read-Only mode across all platforms (web, Windows 11, and mobile). You are entirely unable to perform any "Write" actions, despite verifying that there are no expiration alerts or Acceptable Use Policy (AUP) violation banners in your Admin Center.

After researching this specific behavior, I found that many other users in the Developer Program are currently experiencing this exact same issue with their tenants.

As a first step, could you please try logging directly into your SharePoint Admin Center? Sometimes, backend locks or provisioning errors will surface a specific error message there that doesn't appear in the standard Microsoft 365 Admin Center.

Regarding your request to check the backend "LockState," please note that as a community support forum, moderators and contributors do not have the permissions or access to internal backend systems to check or modify your tenant's provisioning status.

According to a user who recently navigated a very similar situation, the best course of action is to raise a support ticket directly through your Microsoft 365 Admin Center. The internal support team has the necessary tools to check the server-level restriction and unlock the tenant.

You can refer to the discussion of the similar issue here for more context:

Thank you for your detailed troubleshooting notes, and I hope the support team is able to restore your access quickly so you can get back to your development work.

The behavior matches an unlicensed OneDrive account, which goes into read-only mode even if the Microsoft 365 Developer subscription itself still shows time remaining.

    From the documented behavior:

    • When an account has no valid license assigned for 60 days, OneDrive enters read-only mode. Files can be viewed and downloaded, but no uploads or edits are allowed.
    • After 93 days unlicensed, OneDrive moves to archive mode, where files are no longer accessible.

This can occur if the OneDrive/SharePoint Online service plan within the E5 Developer license is not correctly assigned or has been removed, even though the overall tenant/subscription is still active.

    To resolve:

    1. Verify and reassign the license for the affected user(s)
      1. Sign in to portal.office.com with an admin account for the developer tenant.
      2. Go to Admin → Microsoft 365 admin center.
      3. Navigate to Users → Active users.
      4. Select the affected user.
      5. Open Licenses and apps.
      6. Ensure the Microsoft 365 E5 Developer license is assigned and that the OneDrive/SharePoint Online service plans are enabled.
      7. If they are already enabled, remove the license, save, then re-add the same license and save again.
      8. Wait a few hours for the change to propagate and test OneDrive again.
    2. Confirm the account is not treated as unlicensed
      • If the account had been considered unlicensed for more than 60 days, OneDrive would have been forced into read-only mode. Once a valid license is re-applied, full access is restored.
    3. If the issue persists after several hours
      • Open a support ticket from the Microsoft 365 admin center so Microsoft support can check for any backend provisioning or LockState issues on the OneDrive site for the developer tenant.

Note: Developer tenants are short-lived and Microsoft may require them to be recreated every 90 days. Always keep data backed up outside the developer tenant.
