My child’s account linked to my Microsoft Family Safety was hacked

Hello,

My childs Microsoft account (setup in Family Safety) has been hacked, and the corresponding email no longer exists.

In Family Safety, both the name and the email of the child account has been changed by the hacker.

New account with the same email cannot be created, I get an error message reporting that the account already exists.

Is there any way to get back the original account? Or, how to remove compromised account from Family Safety?

Best regards,
Dominik

    I see.

You can also submit a report to them by filling out the form below.

Please fill out this form https://aka.ms/recovermyaccount you should get an email response within 4 hours the latest. The team on the other end will help work through the issue with you.

Note: The form is hosted on the Xbox support site but is available to all Microsoft account holders not just those who use Xbox.

    Hi there!

Sorry to hear about what happened. I suggest to try recovering your child's account first sa there might still be a chance for Microsoft to help you recover it.

It is best to go to the Microsoft support page itself to follow their support guide in recovering your account or creating request.

To do so, just go to the Microsoft website and click on "Start" https://support.microsoft.com/en-us/account-billing/how-to-recover-a-hacked-or-compromised-microsoft-account-24ca907d-bcdf-a44b-4656-47f0cd89c245

Make sure to follow each prompt as this will help in you recovering your child's hacked account. Also, you should be able to remove the child account from the family group as soon as you sign in using the parent or organizer account via https://account.microsoft.com/family. Only the parent account can remove the child and put restrictions on a child's account as well!

Please note that this is a public forum, I will be responding you in short period of time and regret for a delay in response. As I am merely a fellow user trying to provide insight and information that may be helpful to others.

A hacked Microsoft child account itself cannot be recovered or reset from Microsoft Family Safety. Recovery must be done through the official Microsoft account‑recovery process; if that fails, the account generally cannot be restored, but it can be detached from the family.

    For the hacked child account:

    1. Use the official hacked/compromised account flow
      • Go to the Microsoft hacked‑account helper: Start.
      • Provide the child’s email/phone and follow the guided steps. This tool is the only supported way to attempt recovery of a hacked Microsoft account.
      • If the tool cannot verify ownership (for example, because all security info was replaced), there is no alternate supported method to regain access.

If the account cannot be recovered and only removal from Family Safety is needed:

    1. Remove parental consent / supervision
      • Sign in with the organizer/parent account at the family management page (for example, via the “Keep it in the family” section: Learn more about family group features).
      • Open the family group and select the (now‑compromised) child member.
      • If available, select Remove consent next to that child account to stop supervising it.
    2. Remove the child from the family group
      • Still signed in as the organizer, go back to the main family group view.
      • Select the compromised child member again.
      • Choose Remove from family group to detach that account from Microsoft Family Safety.

If the child account was also being used as an Outlook.com child account in mobile apps and is now unusable, it can be removed from the Family Safety section of the parent account as well:

    1. Sign in to https://familysafety.microsoft.com using the parent account.
    2. In Select a child to view or edit their settings, select Remove.
    3. Select the corresponding child account and confirm Remove.

After removal, a new child account (with a different email address, since the original address is still tied to the hacked account) can be created and added to the family group if supervision is still needed.
