I originally used gmail email then changed to outlook earlier this year. I have tried to change my primary email to my outlook address but when I try to add my outlook email address it says that email already exists. It shows gmail as my primary email. I want to change primary to outlook.

Hi! Is the Outlook email address already added as an alias to the Microsoft account that uses the Gmail address, or did you create a separate Microsoft account using that Outlook email address and now want to add it to the Microsoft account that uses Gmail?

If the Outlook email address is currently associated with a different Microsoft account, it cannot be added to another Microsoft account. An email address can only be used with one Microsoft account at a time. In that case, you would need to sign in to https://account.live.com/names/manage and create a new Outlook.com email address for the Microsoft account that uses Gmail, since an Outlook email address that has already been used for one Microsoft account cannot be reused on a second one.

The Outlook.com address is already its own Microsoft account, so it cannot be added as an alias or made the primary alias on the existing Gmail-based Microsoft account. Microsoft does not support merging Microsoft accounts or moving an existing Outlook.com address between accounts.

The only supported options are:

  1. Keep using the Gmail-based Microsoft account as-is, with Gmail remaining the primary alias.
  2. Use the Outlook.com account separately for Microsoft services (it will remain a distinct Microsoft account).
  3. If there is no important data, purchases, or subscriptions on the Outlook.com account, it may be possible to:
    • Close the Outlook.com Microsoft account, which will eventually free the Outlook.com address from that account.
    • Then create a new alias on the Gmail-based account, but note that Microsoft does not recycle Outlook.com aliases, so the same Outlook.com address cannot be reattached to another Microsoft account.

Because Microsoft does not allow account merging or recycling Outlook.com aliases, the Outlook.com address cannot become the primary alias of the existing Gmail-based Microsoft account.
