I have the font style/size set at Arial 14pt in Outlook for Mac program. When write a new email or reply to an email message, the font is tiny. Even my signature at the bottom is unreadable.

This happened suddenly when I was in the middle of replying to an email. I think I bumped a key or two on the top left of my keyboard. I have restarted Outlook and tried to alter zoom but to luck.

    Dear @Marjorie Woodbridge,

I understand that you’re experiencing an unexpected issue while composing emails in Outlook, where the text suddenly appears much smaller than expected. As a forum moderator, I genuinely wish I could directly access your account or delve into the backend systems to diagnose and fix this for you. However, our role here is limited to providing general guidance and solutions that can be applied by users.

From my research, this issue almost always stems from the zoom level in the email composition window being accidentally changed, often due to a keyboard shortcut (such as Command + –) or a trackpad pinch gesture. In these cases, the actual font size (for example, 14 pt) remains unchanged, but the display zoom makes everything appear very small on screen.

Restarting Outlook or adjusting the app’s general zoom settings doesn’t always resolve this issue, because the zoom level is applied per composition window.

Since you mentioned that you already tried adjusting the zoom, may I double‑check the following steps with you:

    • Open Outlook and start a new email or reply to any message (make sure you’re in the compose window where the text appears tiny).
    • Click inside the body of the email to place your cursor there, this is important, as some options only appear when the cursor is active.
    • From the top menu bar, select Options > Zoom.
    • In the Zoom dialog, set it to 100% (or a comfortable level such as 120-150%) and confirm. This should immediately return the text (including your signature) to a normal size.
    • Close the message window and open a new compose or reply window to confirm the setting sticks.

If you’re using a trackpad, an accidental pinch gesture can also trigger this behavior. Try pinching outward with two fingers to increase the zoom.

If you’re using a mouse with a scroll wheel, hold down the Command key and scroll up to increase the zoom level.

Since you mentioned bumping a key near the top left of the keyboard, it’s quite possible that Command + Minus was pressed. In the affected compose window, try pressing Command + Plus a few times, each press should increase the zoom incrementally.

Additionally, it may help to restart your Mac, as this can clear any temporary UI or display-related issues. Once the Mac restarts, reopen Outlook and test composing a new email again.

I hope these steps help resolve the issue. Please give them a try and let me know how it goes. If you have any questions or need further assistance, feel free to share more details in the comments so I can continue to support you.

Thank you for your patience and understanding, and I look forward to your update.

For anybody having a similar issue, here is the actual solution using new Outlook on Mac:

    Outlook → Format → Zoom

Which can also be triggered by ^⌘Z

    Of course it was more intuitive to put the "Zoom" option in the "Format" toolbar instead of the "View" one;

and regarding user-friendliness it should definitely not respect the usual bind-keys (⌘+, ⌘-, ⌘0, or Ctrl+ Ctrl- or Ctrl0)!

Thanks again Microsoft for those daily challenges that makes my computer painful to use and reminds me that I should enjoy life outside more.

    (On 2026/10/26 using Outlook Version 16.114.1 (26102031))
