OneNote Webclipper not working and not letting me sign in - again (March 2026)

In the last few week the MS OneNote Web clipper stopped working:

a) Will not log into my personal M365 account for which I have a Passkey.

Authorization window pops up blacked out for about 30 seconds
Pop up closes
Back to sign OneNote web clipper sign in screen
Infinite loop repeate

b) Will log into my work account, which does not have a Passkey.

Authorization window pops up
Choose to use passkey
Passkey verified through phone
Logs in

c) Will log into another personal M365 account without a Passkey.

Authorization window pops up
I enter non-passkey email address and password
Logs in

Same problem on Chrome, Edge, Brave, and Firefox.

I've:

I checked / updated all browsers
cleared the cache / cookies on each browser
removed the Web clipper extension on each browser
closed all browsers and restarted each browser
restarted my computer after removing / clearing / ...
re-installed the Web clipper extension
problem reoccurs, not able to log into the extension as described above.

My problem seems to be related to the Passkey sign in not working for the Web clipper extension.

Windows 11, version 25H2:

i have the same problem in windows 11 with chrome (up to date) and onenote web clipper. It either shows a solid purple box when I try to use it, OR it asks to sign in to microsoft, which leads to a big pop up sign up window opening and closing for a half second and then one note clipper sits asking to sign into microsoft as before. Chat GPT did a lot of troubleshooting like clearing cookies and reinstalling chrome, and then decided it was a microsoft side authentication glitch and would eventually clear itself. Same problem by the way in EDGE and CHROME and INCOGNITO. (The clumsy one note clipper app in Firefox worked).

Tried the steps suggested by the AI support:

I was able to sign into OneDrive, Edge, and all the M365 Apps without a problem.
1. N.B. My personal M365 account is tied to Windows Hello.
2. The problem may be with OneNote's Web clipper usage of Windows Hello not just the Passkey.
Password is enabled and I changed it to ensure it is the correct password.
1. I also noted that the Passwordless Account option was and remains off
Removed and re-added the Passkey for the account.
1. The account has a historical @hotmail.com alias, which may be part of the problem?
Did this refresh as a part of Step 3.
Retested OneDrive, M365 Apps, Edge, Chrome, and Brave - successful sign in with Windows Hello and Passkey
Retested with all browsers OneNote web clipper - No success and NO option to choose between Passkey and any other sign in method

Problem persists after all steps and there is NO option to choose password, passkey, or anything.

I still cannot successfully sign into the OneNote web clipper with my personal M365 account.

Working again!

I tried signing in with my M365 Personal account this morning and it worked immediately.

I did not change anything on my computer / client side.

I do not know what has changed, but I'm now able to sign in to MS OneNote web clipper with my personal M365 account.

I will accept this answer as resolved.

However, I would like to know what changed to make this work again.

The behavior matches a sign-in/authentication problem specific to the passkey flow, not to the browsers or the Web Clipper extension itself. Context confirms:

Passkey sign-in can fail or get stuck when the passkey on the device is no longer valid or is “orphaned.”
Some sensitive or special sign-in flows still require a traditional password even if a passkey is normally used.

Based on the context, the most reliable workaround is to temporarily fall back to a password for the affected personal Microsoft 365 account, and clean up any invalid passkeys.

Try the following steps in order:

Verify the account and sign-in method in a normal browser

In a regular browser window (not the Web Clipper), go to the Microsoft account security page for the affected personal account (for example, via account.microsoft.com → Security).
Sign in using the same personal account that fails in Web Clipper.
If prompted for a passkey and it fails or loops, choose an alternative sign-in method (password, SMS, email, etc.) if available.

Ensure the account has a usable password Even when a passkey is used, the account still has (or can have) a password, and some flows require it.

From the account’s security settings, go to the advanced security options.
Use the “Change password” or “Create password” option to set a password for this account.
